This figure is entirely incorrect. An average nurse is on considerably less than this, I'd say a staff nurse level would be on around £22k - £25k, which is a fairly senior nursing level, while most of the ward will be a lower level than this, maybe the average on a ward of the nurses (ie staff, sister, etc) would be around the £18k mark I'd say.
A typical ward will look like this:

    1 x Band 7 Manager: £30k - £39k plus shift allowance.
    4 x Band 6 Senior Nurses: £25k - £33.5k plus shift allowance.
    9 x Band 5 General Nurses: £21k - £26k plus shift allowance.

The average nurse may boost their pay by 20% - 30% with shift allowance.

Your £18k as an average for all nurses is very low, in fact no qualified nurse will be paid this low in the NHS. If you take a mid-point salary range and the numbers I've given above, the average qualified nurse on a standard ward will be on around £26k plus shift allowance.

Are we not talking pyramid here  Are you actually saying that if every nurse was bright, motivated and did the right things  they would move up the promotion ladder?

Like every single profession in life, not everyone is competent, ambitious, driven, willing to develop etc. etc. etc. But the ones that are will move up the ladder at the expense of the ones that aren't.

So just like at a bank, restaurant, factory, or any other business, the good / ambitious / lucky people move up the pyramid, the poor / settled / unlucky people stay where they are.

    'tis life hey?

Are you saying the average nurse is not very bright and motivated, and seldom does the right things? Bit harsh.

No, I don't think he was suggesting that at all.

I don't think I was making a judgement one way or the other, I was simply making the point that if they were all bright, motivated etc, there would not be the promotions available icon9.gif

Indeed. And isn't that how organisations work? People find their 'level', either through a celing set by the organisation or their own level of ambition and / or competence, or both.

Agreed, but my point was that it is not a gimme that they rise through the organisation by doing the right things.
BTW you seem quite knowledgeable on these things.

No, of course not. Is it for anyone? Your career progression is a mix of so many factors: your skills, ambition and competence, the company you work for, luck, how many people there are out there like you, how much you get on with management. No different whether you're a nurse, doctor, engineer or cleaner I imagine.

I'm quite a firm believer in making your own luck in life though.

In a previous job I worked for a couple of NHS Trust to put together a fast track development programme for young nurses at the low band 5 level to get them through the ranks quickly in to Ward Manager / Matron positions. The idea was to quickly identify those who were good, ambitious and competent and give them the development and structure required to get to positions where they could make a difference.

Many qualified nurses are earning more than £27,000pa

no doubt a mean average so a few very high earners (specialists etc) could push up the average figure whilst the majority earn nowhere near this.

    No, that sounds about right.

If you take the lowest paid qualified nurse in the NHS they will be on £20,710. They will work 37.5 hours per week. Let's say the average four weeks for that nurse is: Early, Early, Late, Late, Late weekdays in the first week, Three earlies weekdays and two lates at the weekend in week two and then a week of three long nights all during the working week for the third week then just a bog standard week of normal, early shifts for the last week.

I won't bore you with the calculations, but the lowest paid nurse in the NHS doing shift patterns like the one above for a year would make a gross salary of around £25k + pension.
