highway drains

In general, are highway drains, cleanwater (surface water) only, taking the water to rivers etc? Or do they feed into the main sewer which also carries household sewerage to the water treatment works?

Alanobrian, perhaps you could look on your A2 map to see what the case is for your street?

The planning officer at our council told me that our surface water goes for normal treatment just like waste but during periods of heavy rainfall which would overload the waste treatment, the surface water is instead diverted directly into rivers. I would imagine that it would vary according to where you live.
