Sorry, Thrugelmir related a story of a member of a as yet unnamed religion - I'd love to know which one - who committed fraud on a grand scale, which Thrugelmir appeared to be implying was in some way related to his religion.
How is that not racist?
.
Should that not be Religionist'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

He never said the religion was known for fraud.
I think he just brought in to a stereotype about the religion, it does not make the comment racist, perhaps a bit misguided but I do not think he was aiming a shot at a religion.
He just believed being stereotypical linked to finance may have helped the person he was talking about.(rightly or wrongly)
PS now think this as been blown way out of proportion, the poster just had a view on one person and did not make out that the whole religion did the same thing.
As I am sure he does not believe that, the guy is very mild mannered if you ask me and hardly right wing.0 -
Dunno.
As we haven't been let into the details of the religious group, it's not clear if it's also an ethnic group.
Why is it an ethnic group, eg some people say that the Jewish faith is an ethnic group but Sammy Davies Jnr was a Afro American and was Jewish'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. I profoundly disagree - I think what worries me most is that you and Thrugelmir actually regard the idea that there could be people who by virtue of their race or religious beliefs, somehow have a gift for finance (to put it positively, or a tendency to fraud, to put it negatively), as rational let alone neutral.
I'm guessing you're talking about Jews. Am I right? It suddenly sounds much more racist when I actually name people, doesn't it, rather than hiding behind an 'unnamed religion'? The difference between 'mean' Jews and 'tight northerners' (apart from the fact the latter is so little used I've never heard of it as a stereotype before) is that stereotypes like this have been used for centuries and form the basis of an acceptance of an anti-semitic world view that underlies real attacks in the real world. Have a quick look at Nazi iconography for an idea of what I mean.
Not suggesting for one second that you or Thrugelmir are Nazis, or even consciously discrimatory.
Just making the point that we should be more careful and aware of the language we use and the assumptions we make. All of us.0 -
Can we move on? fwiw if anyone is worried what a Jewish person might think, I'll get DH to log on and see. My guess is he'll think its funny: while he's not hardnosed (or particularly big nosed) he does fulfill another stereotype of having a very good sense of humour.
('Jew' can be a race and or religion. The african tribewho claim Jewish ness were tested by DNA suggestting race yet it is possible to convert to Judaism).
Can we let this go, perhaps exercise some caution over potentially racist remarks: as while this my or may not have been offensive I'm sure none of us would like to foster an environment that could undoubtedly become so once more. Can we move on please?0 -
Good post. I'm sure this has now been discussed enough.
Back to topic. Bankrupts, anyone?0 -
Calm down, Really, re-read my posts, no witch-hunt going on, difference of opinion, however.
I feel the topic has been discussed and I've made my points.
