It's in the compatibilty settings on the prioperties (right click on shortcut) but it won't help if the codec is missing which is what the message says is the problem.

Use Gspot which I linked to and it will tell you which codec you need. Install the codecs which I and others pointed to first though just to see if they sort it. If not post back which codec Gspot says you need.
  • I agree with the majority, try VLC player 1st, I don't let codec packs anywhere near my computers!

There is nothing wrong with installing genuine codecs. They have been used in the past for spreading malware but that is when they are downloaded from dodgy sites.

She has already explained that she wants to use the software that they have bought and why.
  • I'm not suggesting that there is, KB, I just don't like the idea if installing dozens of codecs and a handful of media players when just 1 or 2 will do. I had an issue with the KLite pack a few years ago and vowed never to repeat the mistake, I now install only the codecs I need.

Well it's true enough to say that VLC has many inbuilt codecs so using it means you may not need to install a pack but if it doesn't cover the codec you need for a particular video file the simplest answer is to install a pack before trying to track down a specific one.

I'm not aware of any overhead involved in installing multiple codecs. What problem did you come across?

I really can't remember the specifics, but I was encoding a lot of AVI (divx/xvid) back to DVD the laborious way..and something interfered with ffdshow...or the other way around...anyway, it was a pita to fix...never installed a pack since
