Codecs

My church as just bought a new computer for the use of the media team to project words and film as our old one wasn’t powerful enough but every time we try to play dvd’s or short films we make, they will not play and we keep getting an error message saying that we don’t have the correct codec and that it may be possible to download it. Unfortunately it doesn’t give us any clues as to what codec??? we are looking for or where to start looking.

From what I’ve been able to find out this has arisen because of copyright issues but I can’t find out how to resolve this so was wondering if anyone here could point me in the right direction. This is extremely frustrating as you can imagine, especially as after being really excited with new software that would enable us to integrate word projection, powerpoint and film in to one programme we find we can’t even use the free film clips that came with the programme.

Thanks
Ange

Simply download VLC media player here which will handle just about anything that you need.

Not if the required codec is missing it won't.

Gspot will identify the required codec(s) - http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

The Gordian Knot codec pack covers the common ones -
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/gordianknot/

Be very wary seeking codecs - supposed codecs are often actually malware
  • Go here and download this
    http://www.xpcodecpack.com/
on the left you will see other codec packs that you can download but generally all the codecs you want are in this one

+1 for VLC as it covers a vast range of codecs out of the box. You could also try MPlayer Home Cinema with is good too.

If it's just DVD playback you're after, try this.

I'd give VLC a try as suggested above. It seems to play most things. So unless you're trying to play something really esoteric, it'll probably work for you.

Thanks guys. Will try some of these ideas. The worship software that we have bought allows you to use it like a mini control room so that you can import powerpoint presentations, dvd's, short films that our media group produce all into the one screen so that you can go from one to the other without having to go from programme to programme and back again. Which is great when you only have a short time to go from one to another and because we have our youth group (8-13yrs) heavily involved, who because of time limitations don't always have time to run through things before hand makes a big difference. It works perfectly on my 3 year old XP computer so it was a nasty shock to find after buying the new computer that we had this problem.

    Thanks again

Did you try running the worship software (that just sounds weird) in XP mode?

Yes it does doesn't it. If anyone wants to take a look here's the link http://www.easyworship.com/easyworship/. Our version is the 2007 and we are thinking of upgrading to this one but wanted to try and solve this hiccup first. To get back to your original suggestion, no I haven't because I didn't know you could. How would I do this?

Thanks again everyone for the swift replies.
