Is it true that if you are awarded DLA then IS and HB will increase?

My brother has just been awarde Low rate DLA and is receiving IS and HB.

One of his counsellors has told him that his IS and HB should increase now that he is in receipt of DLA?

Is this correct? And if so, do I need to inform the DWP or anything?

(As you can tell, I am trying to sort his finances and am not very good at understanding the benefits system yet!)

Many thanks

No he is 44 - he gets £52 every fortnight IS, Housing benefit and just awarded DLA £18.25 per week.

    Thanks for your help

Which componant of DLA, care can give an IS premium but not mobility and they are both the same amount for the low level award.

  • If he is on IS now he will probably be getting all of his eligible rent paid already.
He wont receive anymore than his eligible rent.

You should however, let the HB department know that this has been awarded.

I'm a bit unsure what you're asking; is it that all his rent isn't covered by HB at the moment?

He gets the full eligible rent (although he needs to pay £30 per week) - his IS is only £25 per week. I was just wondering if there is any thing else he can claim as it does not leave him with much at all!

    Thank you.

Is he living in a house classed as too big for him, ie if he is single is he in a 2 bedroomed house, else by being 44 and receiving IS all of his rent should be covered by Housing Benefit. Or is he getting Local Housing Allowance and his rent is over the local LHA rate?

Without info such as this, it is difficult to work out what he may be entitled to.

    HI Tally

He is in a 2 bed flat = he is receiving LHA and his rent is over the LHA!

    Does that help?

Unless he has children he'll only ever get LHA for 1 bed accommodation. If money's a problem, couldn't he move to a smaller, cheaper flat?

I think you asked about his IS rate before; I still don't understand why he only gets £26 per week. Can he not phone up and ask?
