possible late payment due to postal strike

Hi i have a sainsburys card that i have never missed a payment on in two years. I noticed that my statement hadnt arrived so contacted them as i did not want to miss my payment. As i dont have a debit card,internet/telephone banking without the giro slip from my monthly payment i am unable to pay! he said i would be charged for late payt if i havnt made payment by the 16th october. I think this is very unfair as i am willing to pay it at any bank but have been told without the giro credit slip i cant make the payment. Is there anything else i can do ? He did say lots of statements been delayed due to postal strike and i shouldnt have put myself in the position to only pay through the statement!!!! Very helpful.

  • WHo do you bank with? Even if you haven't registered previously for telephone banking it shouldn't take you more than a couple of minutes to activate that - if you need to at all. Then they can send the payment as a bill payment for you. Unless of course you've had some sort of block on telephone banking?

I would imagine you should then at least be able to go into the branch and have them set up a bill payment for you - you do need to get the account number and sort code from your CC company though. If all else fails - could you maybe get registered fro internet banking? If you don't have internet at home there are always internet cafes?

    Good luck!

If all else fails I'd call again and hope to speak to a more useful agent. If this is a one off late payment and you are in an affected postal area they really should waive it for you. Speak nicely to them and explain, and say you will set up a min payment DD to stop it happening again- they are more likely to help you out.

I'd change provider if you're able to, and cite this as the reason for leaving
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries

OP has another week to get the payment on it’s way. Surely s/he can do that.

thanks for all the replys . Yes i do have a basic bank account , bank with LLoyds and have asked them already if i could complete giro slip with them and send to Sainsburys, the girl said they just wont do this as its not their bank. I dont paticulary trust internet banking but might ask about setting up the direct debit payment so it wont happen again. Did ask Sainsburys if they coul send me some blank giro slips out so i could make the payment but the guy said they couldnt do this you only get the one giro slip with your statement!! He also said he could see that ive never missed a payment with them i have been trying to improve my credit rating so i can get a proper account . Have been working for over a year now and have my salary paid into my LLoyds, working tax credit and Child benefit. Just fed up now cos all my hard work paying each month will be ruined.

Hope you get it sorted soon!
Do you have a friend/family member you can give the cash to, then they can make the payment via online banking ?
Given your good history with them, it's still worth a shot calling again if you are late (when all other options have been tried). 2 years ago there was a Postal Strike and Place I work for automatically reversed fees for all accounts that were in the effected area who had never missed a payment prior to the strike, and dealt with others on a case by case basis. We haven't done this this year as the strike wasn't for as long but Call Handlers have been advised of using their discretion in these exceptional circumstnces. Not sure on LBGs stance on this but worth a shot. Also ask they remove any marker on your CRA (might not be applicable- depends when they send their monthly update).

Postal strikes have been happening for months. It's up to you to pay and there's more than one way. If you are struggling to find a way to make payments try and keep the account in credit by a few pence.

You should be able to setup a bill payment in the bank.. I think you're asking for the wrong thing.

    This should be perfectly acheivable.
Best way at short notice would be to ask a friend, relative, colleague etc. with internet banking to make the payment for you.

If you know no-one (hard to believe) then get the payment details from sainsburys and ask your bank to make a BACS payment for you.
This is not hard, it's just you'r not using the correct terminology and the "jobsworth" behind the counter is not being overly helpful.
