Are iPhone bought from the Apple Store unlocked ?

I can get discount from the Apple store for about another 2 week and was looking to get a 3gs but I want to use it on Orange.

So, are they unlocked from Apple ? I see they come with a O2 sim but does that mean Apple sell locked O2 handsets ? Unlike every other manufacturer.

If they are, can you get an unlock code from Apple?

Thanks. . .

All iPhones purchased from an Apple store are locked to O2. I heard that even Apple employees don't get discounts on iPhone so you would be doing well to get a discount on it.

Also Apple will not unlock your iPhone (at least that is there policy at the minute), you would have to use a program like Ultrasn0w

And apparantly o2 are not currently planning on let you unlock your iPhone at the end of the 18months minimum contract term either.

There is currently no way to get your iPhone officially unlocked in the UK. This may or may not change when O2 lose their exclusivity.

Well that's a good system, I can't think of any other company that forces you to use another. Even the network will unlock if you ask them.

Aren't there reg's that say they must unlock a phone if asked ?

Nope, there's no requirement in the UK for a network to unlock a phone. There is already enough competition for them to not have to unlock devices.
