Moving Gas Meter outside..

Another possibility is the "Gas Care" alter, if your ecv (emergency control valve) is easily accesible in an emergency and you meet the qualifying criteria you can get a free alteration.
The criteria is usually registered dissabled or of pensionable age, as long as some one resident in the house meets the criteria you can apply for the free option.
It is alos worth asking National Grid if they are planning on replacing the mains in your street anytime soon, if they are and your service needs replacing the guys that come and do it are usually aggreeable to putting the service back to an outside box0 -

(1) GSR installers cannot make alterations to primary meters unless they are authorised to do so by the MAM. Meter asset manager>aka owner of the meter.
(2) Nat Grid do not move meters upto 3 metres for free. End users cannot contact Nat Grid direct but route any enquires via their gas supplier.
(3) It is not illegal to have a gas meter within the home.!
(4) transco no longer exists0 -
Isn't there something fundamentally wrong here?
I've just been quoted £908 inc VAT to move a meter from its current location on an inside wall to the exact same position on the outside. The only work involved is shortening the service pipe by about 20cm.
The GSR doing the work inside says its about 30 mins and £40 worth of work, hell he's even took the meter off already so they don't even need to do that.
If only one company is allowed to work on the service pipe then surely thats a monopoly and they can charge what the hell they like. In which case is against rules for competitive trade.0 -
They can charge what they like as it's there service pipe.
gas engineers can only move and install secondary meters and not primary meters.
I have never heard of transco moving a meter for free.
I seem to remember councils had a special agreement with transco where the meter would be moved for a nominal rate.
Gas meter are allowed to be fitted inside homes and do not have to be outside.0 -
Hiya
Re your wuestion, most suppliers can move your meter free of charge only if it is within 3 meters on the same wall. they can charge if outside that. the correct number for National Grid (Transco) is 0845 606 6766. if you dont get transo to complete it, then it would have to be an engineer from the gas safety register (prev corgi).
Hope this helps.

sorry this is the wrong number if you want your meter moved - this is not even a national grid number
gas enquiries is 0845 605 6677 but not the number for meter moves that is 0870 903 9999 as I work for the grid I use these numbers on a daily basis.
A few minutes on the national web site does give details of other companies licensed to do this work http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/Gas/Connections/uip2/comp+connection.htm
other networks websites also hold such information.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -

You mean the form you have to fill in that your not sure where it goes to? Why not just have a list of companies. From what I've read and what the woman implied on the Grid complaints like there are very few replies to that Competitive quotes form.
The whole thing smells like a huge con. They make the UIP process complicated and don't publish a list of UIP's which makes them hard to find. It makes it so doing one off connections and alterations are not worth the UIP's bothering with and the vast majority only do large developments or commercial work.0 -
I asked once before about getting a meter moved outside but decided not to have it done when i found out what it would cost, what i can't understand is, if the meter is easier for the reader to get to surely this is to the advantage of the company.
You would think they would be coaxing all of us to move meters outside, without any charge.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

I am a gas meter installer and my company is contracted to do the metering work for METER ASSET MANAGEMENT company "Onstream".
Onstream say that the meter can be moved up to 1 mtr for free, 1mtr of inlet pipe and 2 mtr's of outlet but not through walls or inside to out. Nobody will supply the boxes, drilling equipment or ecv's needed nor do we have the time to carry out such an operation due to our workload. Private Gas safe engineers with Met1 can move your meter but the service pipe and stop-!!!! would have to remain as only National Grid can move the service. If you are having a new kitchen installed and have an old imperial meter, phone your supplier and arrange to have your new metric meter to coincide with your old cupboards being taken out, this will enable the meter fitter to carry out any movement you may require. Only medium pressure gas supplies are restricted to outside as they have a pressure relief mechanism that from time to time will discharge to open air0
