Sorry if this has already been mentioned but Ikea are doing their Gingerbread houses again this year. They're £2.25 and are great fun to make! They say "glue" together with sugar and water, but it doesn't really hold properly so I bought a big tube of Supercook (I think) white icing which holds really well and looks like snow. It can also be used to stick on sweets to make it look doubley lovely! There is no such thing as a free lunch. Its only free because you've paid for it.
Noone can have everything they want and the sooner you learn that the better.

I've just checked (yes, I got out of bed at 1:15am to go and check the sell by date of a gingerbread house, I think I love MSE too much!) and they are BBE May 2011! So I dread to think what they are made of. But the fun is really in the making rather than the eating (I'll just keep telling myself that).
I know this is a a little obscure, but I bought one for a friend's daughter who is severely allergic to egg as I checked the ingredients and they're egg free. She often misses out on nice treats, so I thought she'd like it. Also, the recipe doesn't look to include any nuts (although it is 1:15am so please do check) but I don't know if it is guaranteed to be nut free.
Finally, Ikea also did some gingerbread or shortbread tree decorations which were (I think) 50p or 75p. I think there were 2 in a pack and you decorated them with icing in the same way as the gingerbread house but then hung them on a tree. Perhaps a better option for the younger ones.
Finally, finally - Aldi had some large tubes if icing in for £1 something. No white in my local unfortunately but its worth keeping your eyes peeled...There is no such thing as a free lunch. Its only free because you've paid for it.

The Ikea Gingerbread house kits are fab and look great made up on a square cake board that can be iced up to look like a snowy garden. They look so good I like to make mine a few weeks ahead of Christmas and have it as a kind of table decoration. Doesn't really get eaten of course after hanging around for a few weeks (except for the sweets that the children pull off), but for me it is more about the visual effect, the gorgeous smell and the memories of our Christmas times in Canada when the kids were smaller and building gingerbread houses was SERIOUS business!
Just one word of warning with the Ikea kits - I always buy one more than I actually need, because the pieces are quite thin and occassionally there is the odd broken one in a pack which is especially frustrating if you have made a long trip to Ikea. Happy Housebuilding everyone!:D0 -
