How does VI affect what we think?

I'm interested in the correlation between what people think will happen and what they want to happen. So here's a poll.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Isn't it rather academic to ask what people think will happen to house prices, as they are now rising at breakneck speed?

I voted for the 2nd option - as we are homeowners - taking early retiirement next year and relocating from the south east to the north east - it's a no brainer really. We would definitely be better off with higher house prices. It doesn't necessarily mean that's what I want to happen - but it is a fact - we would be better of with higher house prices.

And although house prices are currently rising at a rate, I do think they'll fall back a bit over the winter and then pick up a bit again next year - possibly resulting in stagnation for the next year or 2. Though longer term (and I'm not particularly bullish btw) the only way is up.

As I've said a number of times on here, until planning becomes less restrictive and we start building enough houses that people actually want to live in (be it to rent or to buy) in the longer term prices will only go up.

Id be better off if house prices went up. I dont know just only gessing that we are now in NE with our house. So for me thay do need to go up.
How ever i dont think that thay wil do much over the next few years. Some months up some months down but over all i think that will be stagnateing

But in reality I would only be better off if I sold so the "better off" means nothing really. It would just be on the balance sheet, not a "better off" I would see in my pocket.

The problem comes from the inverse relationship between the quality of our society and house prices.

The more expensive and unobtainable human needs becomes, the lower our standard of living gets. Over the past 10 years out overall standard of living had plummetted. We are all now poorer.

Could you qualify that? In terms of housing may be but what about
    • disposable income
    • Cost of luxury goods EG technology, phones etc
    • Car costs in terms of wages
    • Health

I really cant say I that our standard of living is worse than 10 years ago. Perhaps because I am older, but people of the same age as me 10 years ago do seem to have a better standard of living.

People spend a larger proportion of their income on food, housing etc the things they need to exist.

The buying of things we dont need is not an increase in standard of living. That is quality of life.

Could you qualify that as I simply don't see it. For the poorer yes but that is not the UK as a whole.
Have you got any figures to back it up?
like I said our disposable income as increased so I don't personally see it but I am glad to be proved wrong.

I found this on a basic search.

The past 15 years have seen a dramatic change in the UK’s economic performance and its position in the world economy,” said Adrian Cooper, managing director of Oxford Economics. “No longer are we the ‘sick man of Europe’. Indeed, our calculations suggest that UK living standards are now a match for those of the US.”

    .

Our spend on food, drink, housing, and all other bills combined is less than 25% of our net after tax income,, and we don't exactly have a frugal lifestyle. And that includes overpaying a 90% LTV mortgage on a 200K house taken out in 2007.

The latest affordability measures show that the average homeowner spends less than 35% of disposable income (after tax and food) on mortgage payements today, versus 68% in 1990. The long term average is 37%.
