Yes these are defiantly important factors.
Our house is well insulated, i installed new v.thick loft insulation and doubled up in some places as i bought half a roll over.
We also bought a new composite front door. I also put draft strips on the door to our garage and back door. I also put draft strips across the bottom of the back door and with have UPVC DG.
I even put that reflective foil on the back of the rads although doesn't seem worth it. I balanced the rads and overall having it on 24/7 worked out very well for us.
To me it is still a lot of cash each month over winter but it is half what everyone else seems to pay so 24/7 is even more attractive.
But it doesnt depend on your house. 18dC in our house is lovely and warm without being humid. However go round my sister in laws and 23/24dC is about the same feeling in her older semi.
If anyone wants to try it you MUST do 1 week of 24/7 and 1 week of timed in comparable temp's which is key. See the difference and then forecast the increase over the 3 months. Better to do the comparisons before dec when 1 day it could be -2 and another it could be 10dC.0 -

Never put mine on before mid-November and then it's on for as little as I can get away with so usually not more than 40 minutes in the morning and 1h in the evening until around Xmas and I may have it on for an hour or so during the day in Jan/Feb if it's really cold (I work from home) plenty of warm jumpers and cosy wraps normally do the trick! When I do have it on, it's only set to 17 degrees.
I did have it on all day at 20 for 5 days at Xmas (parents visiting!) and in those 5 days I used as much gas as I had during the 3 previous weeks!!! Granted, some of the increase came from having to heat more water as well, but still...0 -
Our heating isn't on yet because it isn't even properly cold. I'm actually sitting here in a t-shirt at the moment but if it does get cold, then I'll put on a fleece or my dressing gown. The OH did mention buying a 2 person slanket for when it does get properly cold. It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0

I have out ours on timer now as its getting colder. Comes on at 6.45am, goes off at 8.15am, comes on at 5.30 for when I get in at 6, but if its warm enough I would just turn thermostat to 10 degrees to make it turn off, then it goes off at 7.15pm, and back on at 8.30 then off at 10.30. It was 3 degrees the other morning when I went to work so I decided it was time! Winter duvet is on now and a fleecy overblanket.
CC limits £26000
Long term CC debt £0
Total low rate loan debt £3000
Almost debt free feeling, priceless.
Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.0 -
Not been on yet, nowhere near cold enough. Not even got the flanneline sheets on the bed and the thick duvet in yet. Im also sitting here in my t shirt with the dog next to me in the living room, both the bathroom windows are open upstairs to let the shower moisture out
The kitchen is at the front of the house (sun is shining in the window in the morning) and the clock reads 20C every morning. Our old house never used to get above 19C with the heating on so its got a lot colder to go yet0 -
Not cold enough here to have the heating on yet, I have the back door open all day for the furpets to go in and out, bedroom window open 24/7 and bathroom window open all day. Last winter my bill was huge due to the rise in fuel prices, so I'll hold out as long as possible but certainly won't be putting it on til November at the earliest...hoping it stays mild for a long time yet! When it does go on it's just on 'tick over' 24/7 which I've discovered works out best for my situation - 3 bed semi very well insulated everywhere.0

Not on yet - even though it's freezing! Just wearing Jumpers.
Even when I do put it on it's a ducted air system which is useless at getting the place warm - we've got a downstairs flat with a neighbour upstairs and one to the side.
No doubt come the end of the month it'll be ducted air heating on AND the two electric heaters we bought last year just to warm the place up then a bill of over £300 come end Jan :-(
Can't afford the £3000+ to install GCH :-(0 -
We have a condenser boiler and an old 3 bedroom semi with Crittal windows (and draughts). To get the house warm the heating comes on at 06.30, is set at 21/22 degrees and stays on until 23.30, controlled by the thermostat. I
I grew up in a very cold 1900s house where we sat in front of a fire to get warm and all suffered from chilblains. A warm house is my luxury and I enjoy every second of it.0
