Standards slipping - or is it just me?

  • I always thought you couldn't take food you are eating into shops. I am sure there was a time when there would be a signs at the entrance saying that. When did that change?

As the OP, I am surprised and disappointed at the number of people who have replied who don't have a problem with people walking around a supermarket eating a hot food takeaway.

I would hate standards to slip further to the level I used to see when I lived in Australia. It used to be a regular sight to see people shopping in supermarkets barefoot, without tops on, wearing just their pyjamas (yes, really!) However my all time worst was people with babies in nappies (quite often sh1tty!) who would sit their kids in the trolleys (not in baby seats, but actually in the bottom of the trolleys where you would put your food! I have even seen on numerous occasions, people sitting their babies (again complete with filled nappies) on the conveyor belt at the chekout whilst they emptied their trolleys. And the staff never batted an eyelid!

The point of my original post was that the acceptance of things like this only causes the steady drip, drip, drip, erosion of values and standards and only has one direction for things to go, and thats down.

Oh that's a common occurance where I currently live. Matrons and out-of-work youngsters seem to schlep down to the corner shop in the mornings with pajamas, slippers and dressing gowns on to get the papers, milk and ciggies.

It's probably old fashioned, but IMO the only time one should be seen in public with nightclothes on outside the house is the hospital

  • I knew someone who studied in France for a year and said that people walking round supermarkets smoking and letting their dogs take a dump in the aisles was commonplace.

A pet hate of mine is people who jabber on their mobile in the queue and continue to talk while they're paying- not making eye contact with the cashier or speaking to them at all, just chucking the money in their general direction. I think mobiles are responsible for a lot of the growing lack of manners.

I remember the No Food Or Drink Inside The Shop signs too- surprising in this age of Health & Safety that these seem to have disappeared.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!

Indeed - 'No food, no drink and no more than 2 children at a time' was a favourite sign where I grew up.

They do still have them on the buses at least, minus the number of children thing. :p

Also, just out of curiosity, do you often confront complete strangers about there behaviour?

Depends, if I want them to hear me then I will direct it at them, not make snide comments in my best Penelope Keith voice and hope they take the hint.

PS. The Penelope Keith voice takes some doing as I am a blokey.
