Just a word of advice as not many people seem to know this - I think bulgar wheat is fine, but you should NOT keep rice for more than 24 hours as it can harbour a very nasty bug - it can even kill you!
DH told me this - I didn't believe him at first but have seen it in lots of other places since.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -

Not to doubt you have heard this jobbingmusician. Just don't think it's real, before being too ill to work I was a chef, nobody ever told me this. I regularly keep rice, rice salads, rissottos and the only problem I have is when my ME fuddled brain forgets to cover the dish up and it dries out. What about all those cook/chill plastic pots of egg fried pilau etc. in the supermarkets? I can't help thinking if rice were such a health hazard one would hear a lot more about this. Will try and research further.M.E..... MORE than you know0 -
Seems there is some truth here.
Rice can be a hazard if cooked and then left at room temperature for several hours, as dangerous bacteria can breed.
However this is just basic food hygiene you'd be daft to leave any cooked food hanging around at room temperature. Though I can see that the danger of doing it with rice is less obvious than perhaps meat or fish. Anything you cook should be cooled as rapidly as possible, covered against flies etc then as soon as you can into the fridge or freezer with it.M.E..... MORE than you know0 -
Thought I would bump this to see how everyone is doing.
I take my lunch everyday and have done since I started work many years ago.
As I can't afford to waste money on buying food out all the time. I am not saying that I don't buy the odd choccie bar or packet of crisps.
But it is rare and I don't carry my purse with me most of the time. So that stop it as well :rotfl:
But someone has allowed a charity to put bags of sweeties/nuts and fruit mixes etc in our lunchroom  good job I don't like most of what is in them. As I would never have any money :rotfl:

Well, I've stopped counting, but not stopped taking lunch to work. Additionally, I've been sort of 'promoted' as a mystery shopper - I am now allowed to do Pret A Manger assignments, so 2 or 3 times a month I have the most delicious lunch and coffee - FREE!
I've managed to spend £1900 on a treat for myself (a secret!) which I've been wanting for 5 years, plus reduced the mortgage another £2k, since about MarchNot all from money saved on lunches :rotfl: but it does help!

Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. When the rice is cooked, the spores can survive. Then, if the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Reheating the rice won't get rid of these toxins.

Today I have home made lentil soup in a thermos, with dried fruit and walnuts for pudding and two malted milk biscuits as a snack! Yum yum.
The soup is amazing - make up a batch at the beginning of the week and it'll keep for 5-6 days in the fridge!
Recipe:
250 gr green lentils
1 large onion finely chopped or grated
1 large/ 2 small tomatoes finely chopped or grated
2tblsp olive oil
1 clove garlic
2 bayleaves if you have them but not essential!
2 vegetable oxo cubes
salt to taste
2pints water.wack it all in a pan and boil for an hour, stirring occasionally and topping up water if necessary. done. yum yum.
Ooohh sounds yum! I'm going to try that (I brought some lentils on a health kick but they've sat in the cupboroard for weeks):rolleyes:The best things in life aren't things.0 -
