Dead Laptop... how to fix?

  • not good... any way to test for that??

Not easily,, if this is the problem, a re-flow would have to be done, basically a 50/50 chance of success. I think they have vids on youtube.

Sounds like the LCD backlight has gone, one way to test is grab an external monitor and plug the external monitor in to the VGA port on the laptop if you then see a picture then that concludes its the LCD panel which you can get replaced if so.

i think it is around 4 or 5 years old. We got her it for Xmas.

Don't think you will get a warranty repair then, think the fault with the mainbord was within the last year.
The checks we do are a static discharge ( unplug the power and remove the battery then hold the power button down for about 30 sec ) it never works but HP tell you to do it, lol
Check the memory, re seat it in the slots and try booting up with just one stick.
If you can get a external monitor try booting up with it connected and see if you get the display ok, at least that will show it's a screen problem if it works.

i already tried re-seating the memory but did not try with only one stick.

    will try that next. Thanks.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
    Not looking good I'm afraid.:(
The maintenance and service guide is here but I don't think it will help much.

Do the single memory chip (try both individually), try removing the hard drive and if you can the CD drive - it won't boot like this, but does it show the BIOS screen. After that it's looking like the motherboard (as you have tried an external display to no avail).
It may then be worth taking it to somewhere that has the facility to test/repair.
  • hi,

just finished testing it - some other things came up, haven't been walking the dog for hours!

tried with one stick, then the other, then tried them both again in the other slot. No success.

will try removing the HD and optical as you suggest.

  • removed 'em both but it is still exactly the same... about a second of fans etc then dead.

i might take it into work tomorrow, maybe our IT guys can have a look at it.

  • this will probably be no help whatsoever but i had a problem with my laptop where it got to the 'acer' splash screen and wouldn't boot any further. I thought it was completely dead after a few diagnostic checks so i bought a new one.
then because i thought it was dead anyway i pulled the thing to bits (cos i'm a geek and wanted to see inside) there was a massive block of dust stuck inside the fan. i removed that, put it back together again and it worked! so, overheating problem?

Mobo is dead. you have tried everything I would have done for a customer.

the only thing i would be tempted to try is a new processor.

just nipping to the shop and il have a think on the way...

Edit: still think it COULD be the processor, the tell tale sign will be a build of dust and fluff around the vents and fan around the processor... While its stripped down, press the power button and see if the CPU fan moves, if not then defo a fryed CPU, if it does move then your lookin at a baked MOBO...... as im such a kind person I hav found you one on Ebay....

this one is cheaper but has no CPU

here are the Processors for that model of laptop, this will be usefull if the signs point to a dead CPU

    Processors (include thermal paste)
    AMD Turion 64 ML-40 (2.2-GHz) 430499-001
    AMD Turion 64 ML-40 (2.2-GHz) 393579-001
    AMD Turion 64 ML-37 (2.0-GHz) 393578-001
    AMD Turion 64 ML-34 (1.8-GHz) 407836-001
    AMD Turion 64 ML-32 (1.8-GHz) 395744-001
    Mobile AMD Sempron M3300 (2.0-GHz) 407837-001
    Mobile AMD Sempron M3100 (1.8-GHz) 430855-001
    Mobile AMD Sempron M3000 (1.8-GHz) 407838-001

Your CPU will have some markings tha match the list above... OR be cheeky and upgrade the CPU while you are doing the MOBO...
