Hi, I posted this in another part of the forum and have been advised to post it here.

Ive never posted here before but can anyone help? Im on benefits of £77 a week, I pay Eon £206 a month, Ive never missed a direct debit payment. I got a letter yesterday saying they want to put it up to £594 a month because of arrears which they say is about £2000 accumulated over the years. I dont get that much in income so what am I supposed to do. Im at my wits end with worry. I called them and they dont want to help. I used to have Energywatchs help they were excellent but now theyve gone what do I do?

Thank you and Id really appreciate any help

Why is your usage to high? Are they using correct reading, is the bill correct? What type of heating to you have and what size of property? Is this for both gas and electric?

To really get some help and advice, it would be really useful for you to list what you are using and what heating you have and how long this balance has accumulated over. And also to read your meter daily to see how many units you are using. I read my meter weekly and cut down if its too high the next week so I don`t use more than I can afford to pay.

The house is a 3 bed semi, i have no gas.The only heat I have are convector/fan heaters, I was given a warmfront grant to have gas heating put in but my landlord refused to let them do the work. They say the bills are correct, they say the arrears have accrued over the last few years as an agreement was reached with Ofgem/Energywatch because I was on benefits. Quite why they are demanding the arrears are paid at nearly £400 a month, I really dont know, they wouldnt answer. They know my income.

Convector and fan heaters use an awful amount of electricity. I really think your best option is a prepayment meter. That way you will only use what you can afford. I can only afford a maximum of £90 for gas and electricity and I used less than that last year so my DD has been reduced to £72. Are you on the cheapest Eon tariff?

I think so, they put me on an online tariff which they said was the cheapest. I have no choice about the heating, as theres no gas and the landlord wont do anything. Ive been trying to move for 8 years, been on the housing lists for that time, but no houses are available, the lists are so long. I dont understand the prepayment tariff, will they set it to take nearly £600 a month anyway?

They set the meter at a set amount per week for what you use and then you pay for what you are using. Do you know how much your bills are minus your arrears?

the £206 covers my bill. so would they just add a bit for arrears?

Yes, you should be able to pay the minimum amount for your arrears.

How much are your arrears (total, rather than monthly payment)?
Does you last bill show a balance? If so, what is it?

Ive no idea, I just found out my password doesnt work, and its only online billing, they say by email that it`ll take 5 days for a new one to arrive, but they said its about £2000. I just dont believe that.

Thank you space rider, maybe I`d be best getting a prepayment meter, do you know if I offer to pay off the arrears at a quicker rate than either the dss or the prepayment meter do I have any chance of them accepting it? My family have offered to pay ot off for me at an amount a month
