Powergen online - Check your Tariff !

Hi

I am with Powergen online for Gas and Electric, both of which rates jumped by a large amount earlier this year.

I just emailed them the following, saying I am going to leave as its too expensive, although I dont really want to change as I have been happy with them. I am not sure which Powergen online tariff I am on, am I on the cheapest rate that they can offer ?

In a couple of days, I got an email back dropping my tariff for Electric from 9.03p inc vat to 6.98p , and Gas from 2.51p to 2.145p !

Plus 12 percent discount still for dual fuel.

I just sent the same email for my dad who is on Powergen online economy 7, and he has got new rates too !.

Try it for yourself, it has worked twice for me, and you also get Tesco clubcard points :-)

Best Wishes

keith are you sure we got 12% for energy online pre dec05 and do they just credit your account with the tesco points or did you ask for them?

Looking at my March bill, It looks like I got an 8 % discount for dual / direct debit etc, so now at 12 %, I appear to have gained a little. I have chainged by dads tariff with powergen, and they didnt mention the 12%, so I will watch the next bill with interest.

Tesco points - when with powergen, you just register a clubcard with them on the website. a handy extra, its a 1% discount in real terms.

One thing I have noticed on my new tariffs, is that the primary rate where they get their former standing charge back, has gone up a fraction, but nothing like the amount the main rate has gone down.

Could be interesting if people posted what their electric / gas rates per unit are, and in what region they live ?

Funny this. We have been with Powergen Dual Fuel Standard tariff for about a year and I've been very interested in switching to another company to save money. The only problem is, due to coming through Winter we are approx £150 in debit on our account so didn't really want to have to pay a large amount to switch. But, tried one of the switching sites today and Powergen Online figured prominently in the cheapest companies so rang them and the immediately agreed to transfer us to the Online tariff and said there's normally a 9% reduction but they would 'up' this to 12%? Went for it, my plan is to get the debit figure paid off by the end of the summer and then look again at moving. Does this all sound about rigght to you experts? TIA!
I spelt my username wrongly on purpose, by the way!

I have been with Powergen for some time now (I originally switched to them when I first discovered this website and earnt myself cheaper bills and a free Freeview Box for my trouble!)

I have been for the last couple of months shopping around using the comparison sites and it was only then that I found out that Powergen have two tariffs - Powergen on line pre DEC 2005 (the one I was on) and Powergen on line. the comparison sites all told me that taking into account my location and usage I could save £174 a year by switching tariffs yet staying with the same supplier.

I tried to sort the matter out over the phone but got someone that either did not know what he was talking about or is trained in fobbing off - or both and I did not get very far. I sent Powergen an e-mail querying the difference in tariffs, asking why I was being charged more and hinting at the fact i was looking around at other providers and within 2 days I had a phone call from someone at Powergen. he said they were 'having a few problems at the moment' and that they had moved me to the new tariff (the cheaper one) and that they would back date it to 30th march 2006 which is, presumably, when there was last a price change.

    Result!

I emailed them to ask what tariff I was on a few days ago and was sent this: (London area)

Your current unit prices are as follows:-

    EnergyOnline - March 06

    Electricity

Primary Rate (first 225kWh per quarter) -

    14.49p per unit exc. VAT
    15.21p per unit inc. VAT

Secondary Rate (all remaining kWh per quarter) -

    8.38p per unit exc. VAT
    8.80p per unit inc. VAT

    Gas

Primary Rate (first 1143kWh per quarter) -

    3.006p per unit exc. VAT
    3.156p per unit inc. VAT

Secondary Rate (all remaining kWh per quarter) -

    2.39p per unit exc. VAT
    2.51p per unit inc. VAT

How do I know if Im on the cheaper or more expensive online tariff? The switching sites do seem to show powergen (or British Gas, not much in it) cheapest for me, but it might be that they are using the cheaper online tariff in their comparisons?

It is confusing and to add to that confusion the amount of energy that you use over the course of a year will of course become a factor. Difference in pricing things also seem to change if you factor in Economy 7 and the percentage of electricity that you use under Economy 7.

I went to the comparison site and found this as the POWERGEN ENERGYONLINE (PRE DEC 2005)

Standing charge 0.00p per day (£0.00 per year) 0.00p per day (£0.00 per year)

    Unit charge (pence per kWh)
GAS 3.156p for the first 1143 kWh per quarter, and 2.510p thereafter

ELECTRICITY 15.080p for the first 225 kWh per quarter, and 9.750p thereafter
Night unit charge (pence per kWh) 4.130p

Direct debit customers receive a discount of 3% off their gas bill and 3% off their electricity bill. Dual fuel customers receive a discount of 6% off their total annual bill. EnergyOnline customers receive a further 2% off their total annual bill. The total discount is 11% off the total annual bill.
All prices shown are inclusive of VAT at 5%.

and this as the POWERGEN ENERGYONLINE tariff

Standing charge 0.00p per day (£0.00 per year) 0.00p per day (£0.00 per year)

GAS Unit charge (pence per kWh) 3.570p for the first 1143 kWh per quarter, and 2.145p thereafter

ELECTRICITY 15.410p for the first 200 kWh per quarter, and 7.400p thereafter
Night unit charge (pence per kWh) 3.520p

Discounts Direct debit customers receive a discount of 3% off their total annual bill. Dual fuel customers receive a discount of 9% off their total annual bill. Total discount available of 12% off total annual bill

Chmmy - you are on the expensive tariff mate. Ring em up, tell them all your mates and people on this website are ringing up and being put on the cheaper (newer) tariff, and they'll switch you
