Sorry to all of you who answer on this board but I seem to have loads of questions lately.
I have someone who comes to my house and always wants to go on my computer as they aren't on the net. I don't mind but I have some personal stuff on there that I don't want anyone else reading. How can I hide it effectively please. I'm sure other people get this problem too and would be grateful to hear your knowledgeable solutions.
Thanks:beer:

If XP just create another user account
Start, Control Panel, User Accounts, Create a New Account, then Call it whatever, now after creating that account go back into User Accounts and password protect your account and also make private when asked.0 -
What Quincy said.
If it's not XP though, you will need to password protect all documents for access.0 -
Huge thanks to both, have created account and password but couldn't see anything about 'make private when asked' or do you mean I just say that

Also now I've created it how do I access/use it
again. Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

Click on your account name in User accounts and then click on create a password and that will password protect your account so no one can gain unauthorised access and whilst crating it you should be promted to make files private.
Make sure that your account is admininstrator and the new account is limited.0 -

I have created a password protected ' limited ' account but nowhwere did it prompt me to make files private. It also said it would be visible on the Welcome screen and the start menu. Sorry to be so dim but now I've created the account I don't know how to access it or use it, or can I only access it when my computer starts up.
Thanks again for your patience.:beer:Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

It will only appear when PC starts up.
Dont worry about the make file private Its not a huge issue as you should be about while your friend is using the net .0 -
You can make an account locked and hidden by doing the following...
When you create a user account, a folder will appear for it under Documents and Settings
e.g.
C:\Documents and Settings\ <<account name>>
Go to
C:\Documents and Settings\ and right-click the folder name for your new account. Make it a hidden folder and then click on the sharing tab and make it private.
Stopping an account appearing on the Welcome Screen
WARNING - The next bit is editing the Registry - be careful and only do it if your you are sure
Go to the Start Menu and click Run. type REGEDIT and follow the instructions on this page.
You'll have a hidden account that you can only get to by holding down Ctrl+Alt and pressing Delete twice at the login screen.
Note
The account folder will still show up in some searches of the computer. For added security, you could name the account "System Folder" or something so people will ignore it0 -
Thanks to you too for that sra.
Right I shut my pc down to see if the account would appear when I restarted and windows did some updates and messed up my internet conncection AGAIN, I'm fed up with windows updates and am going to refuse them as they always mess up my connection.
Anyway, the account appeared but didn't seem to have anywhere to create documents, but it's there so I will learn the rest.
Again a HUGE thankyou to all of you:beer: :jWomen and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

Please don't advise use of REGEDIT to novices. The OP would not understand those instructions - why should they? It's far too easy to make a simple typing error that will lock them out of their PC forever :eek:Can I help?0
