Cheapest way to dispose a defect fridge in London?

Hi,
I have a defect fridge which I want to dispose environmental friendly. I have contact Tower Hamletts but they want to charge £110 + VAT!!!
I guess I could buy a new fridge from a retailer which takes the old one for £15 (only know of John Lewis at the moment).
Does anyone has a suggestion?
Thanks in advance.

Would you consider fly tipping enviromentally friendly?

I just looked and Currys charge £19.99 scrap fee, which may still work out cheaper than John Lewis.0 -
Can you not take it to your local council tip, I thought it would be classed as domestic waste. It certainly is in Scotland, my local tip has a section for fridges. So long as you are domestic and not commercial there is no charge.0

Why dont you wait till the middle of the night and stick it out on the pavement like everyone else does in that area?

Fridges are difficult to get rid of because of the harmful gasses in them. The council will cost you and arm and a leg. The cheapest way is to buy a new fridge and ask the delivery men to take the old one away with them.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
I did a quick search on google and some councils in London take them away or let you take them to the tip for free, I don't see what the problem is. You just have to show that it is domestic waste and not commercial. Check your local council website or take it to a neighbouring council area tip if yours doesn't.0

If you take the fridge to a tip, you will be asked your address, so if you take it to a neighbouring boroughs tip, make sure you use an address from that borough.(".)0

That's odd because their website says:
Bulk refuse disposal
If you need to dispose of large items - like furniture, fridges or other large household appliances - we provide a bulk refuse collection service. Residents are entitled to two free collections per year and five items per collection.
To contact the bulk refuse collection service, please telephone 020 7364 6666
Maybe worth trying that number? Oh, and ignore B-S' suggestion of dumping it, as a lot of councils are targetting and fining fly tippers...0 -
Exactly what I was saying. Most councils take domestic waste free, including fridges. And even if they did charge I think £110 can't be correct. If I were you tctjeremy I would recheck with Tower Hamletts.0

also, when you phone your council, check to see if they offer a discount for retired people. my council had upped the fees from 2 free collections per year, to 5 pounds for up to 3 items[which was ok], now to 25 pounds for 3 items  . but now i find out if i take the stuff to my dad's, and get him to phone, it's free
