White goods 12 month guarantee !!

I was reading somewhere that just because the manufacturer of a newly bought appliance gives a free 12 month guarantee that if the appliance has a fault AFTER the 12 months expires the manufacturer is still liable to carry out a free repair if the appliance is seen to have or should have a long life. So for example a washing machine where the 12 month guarantee has expired should neverthless be covered for repairs by the manufacturer for 2 or 3 years from the date of purchase due to the fact that a product of this nature should have a long life expectancy - any thoughts

You need to approach the retailer and ask for a repair, I'm sure their answer is based on: how long after the guarantee expired, how much you paid and how long it is reasonably expected to last to conform to SOGA. But am fairly confident you have nothing on the manufacturer.
  • Thanks for that Reuben I think I found something via google - have a look at this http://www.whitegoodshelp.co.uk/wordpress/eu-2-year-guarantee/

It's not the manufacturer, it's the retailer who's liable

But please read through the forum before posting threads like this, you'll find that pretty much everyone who posts here is aware that there are legal rights beyond the guarantee.

Really Esqui? I wasn't aware of this at all. Maybe I should use the SEARCH function and see what comes up...

SECRET EU 2 YEAR GUARANTEE LAW
That Whitegoods link above is quite good actually - we should point people to that when it comes up.
There’s been a lot of talk about a new EU directive proposing to give everyone a 2 year guarantee on all products. Many articles are even saying this new right is being suppressed in the UK and consumers are being deceived by retailers. The truth is that it is not the extension to the manufacturer’s 12 month parts and labour guarantee that some seem to believe it is. It isn’t a new law giving us 2 year guarantees instead of 1 year.

Sorry I find it hard to understand all this. I ave the same problem bought integrated fridge freezer from MFI 2 years ago , and seems to be leeking all the time. IT is frozen at the gtop of the fridge and the bottom is all leaking. I rang up the manufactur, but no luck. I too heard on telly a while that they should quarantee it for a reasonable time of use. I hope somebody nolegeable will come here and post soon. I don`t want to buy a new one as per £500 . I suppose I could fix it myself if I can find some parts. Any idea?
