Proud to be dealing with my debts.0 -
I was looking at estate cars six months ago and fancied a Passat or Volvo but ended up getting a Mondeo as I could get a much newer one for the same price. Very happy with it so far..0

Stay away from the renault, id expect the VW will cost you more in the long run, though its bigger than the focus. Volvos a good option but can be pricey like the VW. Overall Id go for the focus, they are reasonably priced, the hatchback is the best in its class and the estate aint half bad either, ford TD engine its very reliable, refined and economical, the ghia model will have all the trimmings you'll want, ford parts are easy to come by and cheap, its been a best seller for years so there are loads around to choose from so hopefully you'll get a good deal, while they should also hold its value respectfully, the focus's popularity also means it'll be very resellable in future.

Surely Focus = Golf size though, and Mondeo = Passat size?
Also, meant to say in my previous post, are you sure the money you'll save in fuel running a diesel won't be wiped out by the increased purchase cost, road tax etc? I reckon you'd need to do quite high mileage for a diesel car to be worthwhile..0 -
I wondered if it was worthwhile getting a Diesel as I realise it is now more expensive than pertol ! Why does the raod taxcost more ?
I didnt realise Skoda where VWs under another name...how did that happen ?
Thanks all you have given memore to ponder on....seems the Octavia and then Mondeo are very popular..."The time is always right to do what is right"0 -
My choice would be :
Mondeo for a bigger one, i have an 02 plate with 92k on it and its just flown through its mot or the Skoda Octavia for a smaller one.

Plus the car will probably cost more to buy. I guess road tax is more because diesel is more polluting?gingerdad wrote:Mondeo for a bigger one, i have an 02 plate with 92k on it and its just flown through its mot
Mine too except it's a Y plate with 135k

I'd consider a Skoda Octavia, and a Volvo V70 or it's current equivalent both diesels.
For a petrol, I'd look at a Vauxhall Omega which will be cheap as chips and you might consider converting to LPG, but it depends what you want the car for. Even after LPG conversion, an Omega will still have a huge boot space. Cheap enough and easy to repair too.
I would also if I were you seriously consider auction as your source - seeing as you are wanting one 2 - 3 years old.
West Yorks....look for your nearest BCA0 -
I am not sure I know enough about car to buy one from an Auction ! I might end up with a dodgy car !"The time is always right to do what is right"0

it will only be 2 -3 years old and still under warranty, just make sure it has all the required service stamps before the auction, by phoning them up or asking the rostrum before sale (they usually read out the service stamps before sale but you really need to have a look at the stamps before sale). Do your research and know what the required service stamps for warranty are so you know what you're looking for. It actually says in the warranty stamp book in the space for each stamp.....i.e. 12mth or 20,000 miles just check the stamp is an official dealer stamp and the date or miles are before the limit, also find out what the manufacturer allows as an acceptable 'overshoot'. You should know all this anyway whichever method of buying you will be using.
Another method is to phone up the dealer and give the registration number they should be able to tell you if the warranty is valid......someone confirm this method please, I know someone who did it with Audis, not sure if he was phoning Audi UK, or his local Audi dealer.0
