taking a mobile abroad(usa)or buying one out there

Hi we going to the states soon and want to use our mobileto call friends out there(cell and land lines) also to call/text another uk couple taking their phone with them,What is best to do as we took our 02 phone out before and get charged a fortune Is it better 1) to buy a sim card out there(are the same as ours?)and put it in our phone,2)buy a cheap phone out there or 3) just take ours?Can we just go into shop out there and buy a sim that will only last for a couple of weeks?or pay as you go

    I unlocked my phone as took it with me, and just bought a SIM, had to present my passport, and remember, you get called for making and recieving calls. I said about $23 in total, including tax, but it lasted us a week with a couple of calls. You can walk into a store and ask for a sim.
