what to use instead of shaving foam

any ideas? my friend doesnt like the chemicals or the packaging in "normal" shaving products, and he was just asking (as he knows im tight) if there was a "traditional" item which men used to use for shaving in the days gone by...

if not any reccommendations for a good quality modern one?

You can still buy shaving soap. It comes in a dish but you need a shaving brush to use it. Wet brush, rub round the soap and hey presto you have 'old-fashioned' foam.

Would imagine this would still contain some (?) chemicals but not as many as needed for foam from a tin. :)

I had a look around and I came across this site http://www.webguru.com/homemade-soap-shaving.htm but as it looks a bit complicated I kept looking - what about this?

You can still buy shaving sticks for around 70p from Sainsbury's. I think its a Palmolive product I buy for hubby. Usually tucked at the bottom shelf below all the expensive shaving foams. I am sure you can also get it in Boots. Also get Wilkinson Sword shaving bowl with soap in that.

  • My fella uses Cariad shaving oil. its made from 100% natural essential oils. he really likes it. It was from Tescos but i'm sure the company has a website. hope this helps

  • try Erasmic, you can get it from most chemists/superdrugs etc and you don't need the shaving brush, its about99p for a tube, ideal for travelling as well and a little goes a long way ;D
  • I use Body Shop Shave cream - comes in a medium sized tub and last aaaages. Only needs a tiny bit on the end of a brush, lather it up on your face and Robert's your fathers brother.

I think I am on my second or third pot, and I have been using it for probably 7 years!! I am a 'when I can be bothered' kind of shaver so I don't use it everyday (more like 2 x a week), but you need such a small amount each time, and I am fairly sure it comes in at under a fiver. Either way it lasts for ages and gives a really good shave in my opinion.

not sure it would work on faces but you can use hair conditioner quite successfully to shave your legs ::)
  • Boots etc sell bowls of shaving soap. These cost about £2 and last for about a year. However I find the quality of the lather is not particularly good, so I use a tube of Ingram Menthol shave cream with a brush, this costs about £2.50 and lasts about 6 months.

Alternatively you can use conditioner - works very well but might not be good on sensitive skin - or Aqueous Cream moisturiser - a big tub from Superdrug costs about £2 and should last about two years, it's very good for the skin because its a moisturiser as well.

Aqueous is brilliant stuff - my doctor recommended it for washing instead of soap when I had eczema, it's better than the proprietary medicines and much much cheaper.
