Tools and hardware are regularly offered by these two shops and though it is not branded with well known names (eg Bosch) I have yet to buy something that turned out to be rubbish.
They both offer a twice a week Email and I'm lucky in having both in my local shopping centre.
The "boys toys" are offered at least once a month and other hardware often has a seasonal link (eg gardening tools in the spring). If something does not sell within the month it is likely to be discounted further.
I seem to remember buying a telescopic sack barrow for about 13 GBP as an example.

"Architectural reclamation" is the posh name for scrap yards of building materials.
It has become fashionable to re-use and it does not create that "brand new extension" look. Here in S.Essex a lot of people make a living servicing Greater London so there are some suitable yards. They are always open to negotiation.
There is a lot of second hand stuff on Ebay.
You might find a regular auction of builders' stuff and/or farm sale auctions, if a farm changes hands.
Always worth keeping an eye open at boot sales.
Harry.
PS I'm not above having a good sniff round at our local dump, if I've got something to take down there - my daughter has a perfectly Ok window frame built into her extension - it came ready glazed too !
Skip diving is a hobby in London, so I am told. Here we have to put up with fly tipping!

Are tools from Lidl any good - I'm always a bit dubious because they're cheap?0

I've found this great website called - WhatDoIDoWithThis.com
Basically you can sell building materials that you don't need once your project has finished and you can also buy things from other people who have materials left over from their projects. So not only do you get to save money on your developments, by getting cheap stuff and selling your leftovers at the end - BUT - there is less waste and you are helping the environment by recycling.
It's also a really great website - easy to use and to navigate round - it's my new favourite!

Hi Katy,
First time poster, should I say welcome? (or should I whisper s-p-a-m ?).
I've had a look at the site and it has yet to achieve a "critical mass", it also seems to have been taken up by some commercial operators, who may not be offering real bargains on end of range stuff.
My sister is renovating a pile of old bricks, some of which dates back probably to the civil war. I call it her "money pit". She gets a lot of stuff over Ebay. If I recommend this site to her, in what way is it better than Ebay ?
That said, it appears to be offering some free adverts so they may help someone save money, if they want to off load surplus building stuff.

Hi Harry,
Not sure why you want to whisper s-p-a-m.... ?? Isn't this whole site about sharing info on things people find - but I won't take offence, as it was my first post!
EBay’s fine to a point - but at least when you search for bricks on whatdoidowiththis.com you don’t get lego in your results!
My husband and I do a lot of DIY work at home, and we found some really nice roof tiles on there – sadly they only had a few left as most had sold. But I really like the site, and I think it’s a good one to keep an eye on.
