Worth trying market stalls too. Also, don't know whereabouts in the country you are but if you are in the North, North east or north midlands, you may have a branch of 'Boyes'. It's a bit like Wilko's but more of a mish mash & you do find some good bargains. Ours has a good craft/haberdashery section at the back where they do cheap yarn and also quite a good selection of the branded fashion yarns but often at cheaper prices. Fabric prices not bad, either, tho' the selection varies from month to month. My Mum does a lot of crafts and often waits till she visits me as she says the prices for several of her craft supplies are cheaper here. It's one of those shops where you could go in a few times & not really find anything, then the next time you go, you come out with a nice little bargain!

  • I make charity blankets for the Linus project and get a lot of stuff from handknits at bootsale or charity shops and unpick and recycle the wool after washing it.
  • how about knitting things from fabric cut into long strips? You could knit a bathroom rug from old towels cut into strips and would into balls, you would need huge needles for this. How about using string from ironmongers/garden shops to knit shopping bags (might be a bit scratchy on your hands tho)

I look out for odd balls in charity shops and jumble sales, also unravel jumpers for the wool.

There are factory outlets in west yorkshire such as coldspring mill which sells tents but has a huge cellar downstairs which has all the wool you could imagine http://www.coldspringmill.co.uk/ also http://www.texere-yarns.co.uk/ worth a day out at least depending on where you live.

Do you know how much it is? Is there much choice of colours?
  • Keep trying on Freecycle - my dd was lucky enough to get a huge (and i mean huge - 1/2 a box a small fridge had been in!!) full of wool - really good stuff too (some Debbie Bliss and loads with a high wool content in) - another time she got 10 knitting magazines (at £3-£5 a pop!!!!) for nothing. I have just got an order for Arran from Kemps - arrived really quickly and a good price too.
