Most people who knit refer to the stuff they knit with as wool. Just like owning a Dyson and using it to "Hoover" the carpets. My mum used to do that too, except she didn't wind them around chair backs... we had to sit with our hands out for her to wind them round! My arms ache just thinking about it!
Me to, I spent my first 16 years holding my arms out for my mother to wind wool. In an effort to escape I got married, but married a girl who was just as keen on knitting. In fact, as she got herself pregnant just before we got married, she was even worse!
Twenty years of her knitting things, then a month later pulling them out and reusing the wool to knit the same thing but bigger! :mad:0 -

I rate sirdar bonus yarn, its 100% acrylic but its nice and soft and squishy - much better than buying cheap wool which can be scratchy.
I buy mine from ebay its £1.56 (including postage) for 100g ball. The ebay shop is called stackthemhigh0 -

Oundstretcher had 5 balls of acrylic for 4 quid yesterday (100gms) and 4 x 50gms for 2 quid, quite soft for the price. Saw some fab wool in Wilkinsons for 97p as someone said on here and the colours were good but didnt have the cream colour I wanted to knit a baby suit!Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -

I make charity blankets for The Linus Project and get a lot of wool from Wilkinsons, true not pure wool, but machine washable and the kids that get one of my 'blankeys' usually live in some of the most deprived areas of the world i.e. south american rubbish tips ,eastern europe ect.I also find wool from jumpers bought in a charity shop that have been hand made, and I bring them home unpick, wash and re-knit after drying to get all the kinks out.
Ask around you will be suprised how many people will happily just give you the odd ball maybe leftover from a project, or they have given up on. One of the ladies at my craft club asked me before Christmas if I wanted any wool and I always say yes, and she had been clearing her loft out and had 6 big black plastic sacks of four-ply of all different colours that she had found up there left over from when she had a knitting machine.I split it with my pal as she crochets blankets for the same charity, and we have enough to last us for a couple of years The wool is still on the funnel shaped rolls and is all different colours of the rainbow .As its four-ply I have wound up balls using two different colours and get a nice stripey effect.
Also buy some hand-knits from bootsale,s often you can get baby double knit that just needs unpicking for around 20p a garment .Its the ultimate in recycling, nothing ever goes to waste I knitted around 60 odd blankets last year and they cost me very little but the children they have gone to have a blanket with a small label stitched on the bottom saying 'A present from the Linus project.I have seven lucky, warm and healthy grandchildren, there are millions of children who have nothing to their name but a blanket so I enjoy helping the kids out in a way that costs me virtually my time and energy and very little else .I know where the blankets go which is another bonus they don't end up in a shop they are shipped directly to the countries involved0 -
Hi JackieO I would love to be able to knit for this project. Can you please tell me what size of squares and how many? I really enjoyed your post too about knitting with your Mum.Do a little kindness every day.;)0

Yarn Paradise also have a shop on Ebay. £7 for four 100gm balls of cotton DK with £3.90 postage all other items postage added on at £1.90 each. Still a bit better price than proper wool shops and 48 hour delivery. They are called Yarn-Paradise-UK on ebay.
40% quidco cashback for Ebays charges might end up a bit cheaper than paying overseas postage I don't know.
Thanks for posting about Yarn Paradise I've recently got well into knitting for my son and this place will save me a bundle!!!0
