Credit Card - over limit

I went over my limit with Egg yesterday on my credit card (I know, bad me
).
I went £20.13 over my limit. They advised me that I'll be charged £15 for this privilege.
When I went through to their Collections department, the very terse peron on the phone asked me why I went over my limit. Now a little annoyed by this, I replied with "well because you allowed me to".
Her reply was that they allow everyone to go over their limit, and that I should always make sure I have enough spare on my card to take into account the interest etc.
So I am being charged £15 because they didnt decline a payment on the card, even though it took me over my limit.
Am I the only one who thinks that this is a little unfair?

Cruel to be kind, you should always keep an eye on your spending and balance.
Wouldn't worry about it though as long as its a one off.
Check your credit report too.

At the end of the day it's your card so you should be aware of the limit and current balance I guess.
I am sure they would have also have a lot of unhappy people complaining that their card got declined after spending ages getting all their shopping through the tills only to not be able to pay for it and being embarassed.
If it was a one off if you write to them they are more than likely to cancel the charge as well - definitely worth a try.
Live and learn.

You're not being charged because they didn't decline a payment on the card- you're being charged because you spent over your credit limit.
Lots of us have done it at one time or another... as the others have said, don't worry, live and learn

It's your card and your responsibility to manage it according to the credit limit applied. You've been unfair to yourself by not keeping an eye on your spending I'm afraid.
(They can't stop it at the limit because of the need to apply interest if applicable. Do you suggest they don't charge all the interest payble if it takes you over a limit ?)
If this is a first offence of kind you could apologise, ask nicely and posiibly get the charge refunded.0 -
Take responibility for yourself and stop acting like a child.
Your bank trusted you to look after YOUR financial affairs. You didn't.0 -
Yes it is your place to make sure you have enuf money to cover your outgoings but i know this is very easy to do.
I too have done the same a few months back when i moved house. I didnt realise till my statement turned up that i had a £12 fee. I wrote to the bank apologising and accepting that it was my responsability but did mention that i normal pay my card off in full every month and with moving i just got a bit caught up.
The had no prob whatsoever returning the fee.
Hope this helps.:j0 -
I had spent £1900 on my credit card (£2000 limit) had the bill and paid it off before it's pay-by-date. However between getting the bill and paying for it spent another £110 and the next bill had £12 fee for going over. I threatened to cancel my card and they waivered it. (Cancelled it anyway because Tesco called my wife a liar in store... long story)0

I don't understand -- why do some lenders decline transactions which will push you over your limit whilst other lenders let them go through and then fire a charge on you?0
