    Just in case you do have some time, could your friend drive to the passport office (Peterborough I think, but maybe others) with the relevant forms and get a passport there and then.

    Officially, you should possess some sort of photo-ID to cross the border - but this can be as simple as a bus pass.

    Anyone that isn't a UK or Irish citizen officially needs to carry a passport or EEA/CH national identity card, though.

    Anyone over 16 applying for a first time passport will have to attend an interview and cannot apply for a premium (4 hour) or fast- track(7-day) service. It can take up to 6 weeks or more - though this is a quiet period so shouldn't really take that length of time if it is straightforward.
