Best broadband deal? Talk Talk?

Hi all,

Currently my flatmate has the wireless internet for the flat, she pays £30 a month and we give her a split of money for it. She is with aol on the platinum package (an older deal) which finished ages ago and it just continued on the same rate as far as i am aware. This package will move with her to her new address.

Anyway she is moving out soon and we are looking to get a better deal but im not too sure of the ins and outs.

I have the bt landline in my name.

I was looking at talk talk provider and they offer a better phone deal with internet at only broadband 6.49 per month with 40gb useage. free router etc I am not too sure how much useage 40g will be, how much does one film download use? I only use it for surfing really and my flatmate downloads the occasional film.

Can anyone give any advice as to the useage and if they have found talk talk to be good or bad.

Or if anyone knows a better deal out there for wireless internet any advice will be appreciated.

TIA

  • Talk talks really good for us speed wise etc. The only 2 bad things for us werethat we could not get the free broadband as it is not available in our area - even though this is the package we were offered when I signed up - I recieved a bill that said otherwise, but I did stick with it. Also, with talk talk, you cannot alter the date in which the direct debit comes out of your bank account, so if you had say, a set date that all of your bills came out each month, talk talk throws it off a tad. Easily resolved though and not a major problem really :) Routers good, easy and very quick set up.

How did you find out about the free broadband not being available in your area? would i phone to find that out if they supplied my area or not? So you can still get the same broadband in your area at 6.49 say but just not the first 3 months? is this correct?

Were you with bt before? would they charge you a fee for transferring to talk talk. I am not sure if i can change without a fee with them as i recall signing something for free calls for another 12 months....

    TIA

40GB is a lot for what you intend to do but I am not sure if TalkTalk would be the best BB provider as they seem to have a reputation to limit of throttle speeds according to some users.

    Have you considered O2 broadband?
If you have a mobile phone with O2 either contract of pay-as-you-go (assuming you top up at least 10pounds every 3 months) then I would recommend them as they offer discounts for mobile customers.
If you sign up to them online through topcashback.co.uk you can get up to 100pounds cashback

If your friend downloads movies or watch streaming broadcasts (BBCi player) or youtube then I wouldn't recommend mobile broadband as the monthly allowance is very small

If you insist on a monthly capped usage allowance I would recommend you have a look at usage meters such as this one, it is highly recommended for capped BB

I think 40GB is probably more than most people would use (even taking into account that there are two of you). Unless your housemate is downloading a lot of films it should be fine. If you are worried however a lot of providers offer unlimited (subject to their definition of unlimited ;)) usage.

Hiya, It sounds terrible but the only way I found out was when I had the bill through the post which informed me of my future payments, so I called to query it. Suffice to say, I was a little annoyed at first but there are alot of more expensive broadband packages out there. Someone later told me that you can do a broadband check on your area on the talk talk website but I never bothered looking as I was already signed up.. I've just had a look and you can do a postcode check on the home page of the talk talk website but I don't think I can post links, so just search for talk talk. I think the postcode check will tell you what packages are available to you :)

I was with bt, yes, I think I had a little while left on my contract so bt charged me £8 odd. They did, however, continue taking money from my bank account for the next three months despite saying they had cancelled this. I did get this all back though and with no hassle. Although when I changed from bt to sky, I paid a £35 service fee.. perhaps it varies?? If you are unsure as to how long you have left on your contract, make sure you contact bt first to see how much your fee will be to end the contract as it may just be worth waiting a few months longer.

    Hi wishuponastar

You can check what is available at http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php

Pop in your phone number and it will tell you what is available at your exchange. The "cheapest" options are those that are "LLU enabled" - such as the talktalk offer. These involve moving your phone line away from BT and on to their equipment at the exchange (often on a 12 month+ contract).

If you are signed up to the BT 12 month rolling contract, then they will charge a fee for leaving within the 12 months based on the number of months remaining.

As you have a BT line you can go with any provider for the ADSL (up to 8Mbps) broadband packages. If you are happy with BT, then have a look at their packages. They aren't necessarily the cheapest, but they offer some interesting bits and pieces (homehub etc).

    Good luck

If you are looking for a good service then you will probably be looking at one of the lesser known companies. I myself used to be with ADSL24; the support is UK based, if you are not sure of what you are doing if something goes wrong then they have great support, but if you know your techie stuff, they talk to you at a level you can understand.

Other good rated companies are Zen, Fast.co.uk, o2 and Namesco. :)

Thanks for the suggestion, i have looked into O2 broadband and it looks to be pretty good value esp if you are an o2 customer.

Is mobile broadband what 02 are offering? or is it usual broadband?

how does it work the o2 deal? My sister is a customer PAYG of o2 so would the contract for the broad band have to be in her name too or is it just a case of i can put it in my name and use her number? And if i go with this deal of an o2 customer discount can i do it online as to get the cashback deal too?

[I also have my bt line for another year so have ruled out talk talk package as it would cost me £82 to cancel with bt]

    TIA
  • i have just checked on the o2 website and the area i stay, (city centre) is not available so it is only the access package available which is 22.xx per month or £5 less for o2 customers.

I checked my mums house and she stays quite rural in comparison, a small town, not a city and she can get the o2 cheaper broadband deals.

    Bizarre....anyways still looking...
