Do 3 Mobile sim cards work fully in unlocked non-3 mobiles?

Want a HTC Hero but am trying to steer myself away from a contract and buy one off e-bay.

Am looking to use a 3 mobile PAYG sim for the 1st 6 months until my wife's 3 contract is up - free 3-3 calls and 150mg of data on every top-up - and then take out a 12 month sim only deal with whoever she signs up with.

I keep reading that there may be a problem using a 3 sim in a non-3 mobile phone and not get an internet connection and possibly have the sim blocked by 3 mobile if they detect it's not one of their original phones.

Has anyone encountered any problems they can tell me about as this would be just the job for a few months as my calls would mostly be free and the 150 mg would keep the widgets up-to-date (mostly will use wi-fi at home).

Thanks in advance.

When I last had 3 contract, sure I was swapping the sim to another phone which was not from Three.

Think the phone has to be unlocked (normal) and 3g capable - you can check here http://www.three.co.uk/Pay_As_You_Go/SIM_Only/Getting_started for specific model compatibility

I have a Nokia 6220c that I bought from Expansys - I normally use an O2 SIM but a 3 SIM works fine as well.

THE UNLOCKED PHONE MUST BE 3G (UMTS) PHONE! then the 3 simcard will work!

Find the mobile you are looking for on gsmarena.com, and if it says 3G THEN you can use a 3 simcard - otherwise it's not possible.

Tried this phone in the link to 3 site mentioned above and there is an option for it and it comes up trumps but clicking the HTC option there are only 2 phone options neither of which is the Hero.
