blood in my cat's poo...

Sorry not a very nice topic, but my oldest cat (1,5 yrs) has a bit of blood coming out with her poo... It has been like that for about a week now, and the poo is also more runny than normal. We incidentally had a vet appointment with her on Friday, and she said just to keep an eye on it, as everything else seemed normal.

She eats and plays like normal (her younger sister keeps her in shape), a quick google suggested it might be worms - and we gave them a top up of advocate over the weekend which should treat worms as well.

Has anyone got any experience of this, or any suggestions to what it might be? If it doesn't stop we will obviously take her back to the vet.

Thank you

  • Hi. Don't have any professional knowledge to offer i'm afraid but my cat who is about 12 has blood in her stools about 1 a week/fortnight. At that point it's usually runny too but then it clears up and goes back to having no blood in it. She seems fine too and I've mentioned it to my vet previously and she said it was nothing to worry about if it was only an occasional thing.

Make an appointment and get her to a vet, get an expert have a look and decide if there is a problem or not.

keep us posted, hopefully its nothing nasty *fingers crossed
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

What are you feeding her? Is she getting enough fibre from grass and veg, is she possibly allergic to something in the food?

my cat used to get that - it was caused by constipation in her case.
fingers crossed for nothing nasty x
  • Thank you for prompt responses - we feed her Purina, and they both get mostly dry food but drink plenty of water. She used to eat mainly the "sensitive" stuff (as her sister who sadly died in June would throw up from anything else!), but we have been giving her the "neutered cat" option for the past couple of months as she could do with losing a little bit of weight.

Saying that, the kitten gets the "kitten" option, but they tend to swap bowls halfway through to get a bit of both!

Which Purina, Pro Plan or One? Does either that she eats contain wheat, soy or corn (maize)? If it does maybe her digestion is aggravated by these, might be best slowly switching to a hypoallergenic range such as Organipets, James Wellbeloved, Wafcol or Vitapurr.

Very common in cats. Best thing is to starve her 24h then bland food for a few days. Also to worm as well just to make sure :)

    Stop eating it !!!!!!
  • My cat had this once, i took him the vets, vet did usually temp check, gland check etc and said there was nothing wrong with him, prob constipation or something, but if it didn't clear up then to take him back for further tests.
So pretty much what your'e vet has said really, an sure she will be fine as it is very common.

My cat has this too (tho hasnt happened for a few months, after a good check up at vets, it was decided it was caused by constipation-basically her straining and bleeding slightly. In my cats case it was only a tiny bit of bright red blood. If theres lots of blood or its a darker colour (meaning usually its older blood) then id definately get her back to the vets asap.

    Hope all turns out ok.
