I have xp on my desktop pc, i have just got ubuntu 9.04 delivered as a cd,i dont want to install it and dual boot with xp but im wondering if i use it as a live cd "as in the funtion that you can use the ubuntu os without it being installed on hard drive" will this method help stop getting virus when my son plays online free games so i would use xp for me and run ubuntu on live cd when he uses it,or would infections still get in,the site he likes is https://www.andkon.com

  • you can do it like that, but you would have to reinstall flash every time you reboot into ubuntu as the live CD doesnt contain flash

You probably won't get a satisfactory experience - the performance of a typical CD-ROM makes quite a lot of operations very slow compared with doing the same thing off the HDD.

From a performance point of view you would be much better off installing and dual booting. Do you have a spare old hard disk that you can install as well as your existing one? If so, you can make that the bootable drive and install Linux on it ~without making any changes to your existing HDD~. To revert, simply make your main HDD the primary bootable drive and you are back to how you were before.

Some BIOS make this easier than others (e.g. if they have a "boot sprite" option).

Wubi can be used to install Ubuntu & its derivatives into a folder in Windows, permitting dual boot but also allowing it to be uninstalled via Windows 'Add/Remove Programs'. On a half-decent machine, the performance 'hit' in running Ubuntu in this way is minimal.

Adequate antivirus installations in both Ubuntu and Windows should prevent any cross-infection.

You could install ubuntu to a usb memory stick and provided the computer can boot from it (Set in the BIOS) you'd be able to save sessions to it update it and install stuff on it. 4 GB would be more than adequate.

Download VMWare player and install it on a virtual machine.

You can create the virtual machine here: http://www.easyvmx.com/

Or you could give your son his own profile and use Windows Steady State.

We install this on "open to the public" pc's we install.

  • If you insert the disc while Windows is running, it should auto-run and give you the option to install using Wubi:

To quickly add some popular proprietary multimedia codecs and browser plugins, simply follow the instructions on this page. Anti-virus software is largely unnecessary, though you might want to enable the provided firewall using gufw.

The Wubi method is probably the easiest way to go.

Once it's installed you'll get a menu pop up, when you turn the PC on, asking which OS you wish to use!

XP can't see the Ubuntu files or folders but Ubuntu will see the windows files and folders.

    Also

A good tip *IS* to install a free antivirus in Ubuntu, so you can scan all the Windows files and programs when they are not running. It's a lot easier to remove the virii that way ;)
