Antivirus on Linux/Ubuntu

Options
Hi
I'd just like to know if antivirus is required on a Linux operating system? I'm sure I've read somewhere that its secure and doesn't need antivirus but I cant remember where I've read it.

I've just got a Ubuntu CD so would like to make sure before I install it.
Is the above true about it not needing antivirus software and if I do need it where would I get one for Linux or can I use existing antivirus software.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. Peer at your baby's eyes for them to reflect back just people-throw away your flags and religious symbols...

You're less likely to catch something on Linux than you are on Windows, but some would say it's better to be safe than sorry.

There are quite a few AV applications for Linux; off the top of my head, there's ClamAV, AVG free, or Panda Antivirus.

Although they do run on Linux, they're not necessarily for Linux. In fact they're primarily used to scan for viruses that infect other operating systems, the idea being that the system running the AV will 'catch' these nasties before they do.

ClamAV for example is "designed especially for e-mail scanning on mail gateways." Which is nice, should you happen to have a mail gateway.

Nevertheless, if you'd still like to know more about running ClamAV on Ubuntu you'll find a short guide... here.
