Hi all,
I'm new here, have jumped in with both feet and I'm already feeling at home posting but I cannot post links. I'm feeling totally constricted not being able to post a link reply to someone who asked help picking a camera or an idea for stocking fillers. I know the reasons behind it (spam spam spam) and that I should be patient but how long do I have to wait until I can post links? Do I have to wait a certain period of time, wait until a moderator considers me fit to add links, or hit a certain post count or is it random?
Thanks

We believe its a number of posts but nobody seems to know (or tell) the answer as to how many -

I did see someone yesterday who thought he still couldn't post links but then found he could - he had about 106 posts so it could be 100 posts (but I'm only speculating)
All you can do in the meantime is put a space in the link or change the @ sign to something else so that a person can understand it but the computer doesn't read it as a link.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Thanks for that. The geek in me wants to find out the answer so I may have to try and add a link to every post to find out which number it becomes active.
still no luck0 -
You can thank spamming for the restriction because its a popular site some spammers like to spam there web site this not only gives them publicity on here but on search engines too. I believe its around the mid 20 posts from what I seen on forums with newbies but cant give a precise figure0

Ooh. Thanks. The geek in me has cranked it up a notch and I now want to find out. I actually suspect it may be a random number generated between two limits for example, a random number between 20 and 30.

Post 20 and
still no linking0 -
I can understand your frustration, but as Tixy and savemoney have said spam became a very big problem, there was a time it was upto 500 posts a day of spam
My gues is its something to do with frequency of posts, number of posts and how long you have been a member
I don't think anyone knows for sure:rotfl:
If you post the adress without the link or the whatever links it (i'm no interweb genius} the http or the @ bit, if its a good one one of the members how can do links will do itPROUD TO BE DEALING WITH MY DEBT NERD #869Numpty,Not sure why but I'm crying. Of all the peeps on this board you're the kindest & most supportive of all & I'm  &
for you all at the same time . Wish I was there to give you a big :grouphug: & emergency hobnobs

I think it may be time as well. Because I'm convinced I saw someone with a relatively low post count spamming yesterday but they had been a member for a while.
It's like the KFC recipe, no one really knows.

Still no links.
I get the reason behind the policy but it's starting to annoy me. This is totally restrictive. I belong to many different forums and groups but never before experiencing such an environment. The 'must be a member at least a day' or 'have posted once' is fine but posting maybe up to 100 times before you can post a link seems just too much.
Yes, spammers abuse it but I say having an account at least a day and posting into double digits is enough to keep the spammers away.
With the current situation people like me who want to reply to the fullest and get involved are being penalised. If I feel like I'm not getting the full experience and I can see myself wanting to get involved less and less and thus never reaching the allusive target number of posts.
The second issue is the boards may become crowded with newbies trying to up their status through posting anything (possibly like this moan) to get more posts.
End rant. I'll keep you posted and let you know when the links are unlocked.

ps I think I only want to post links because I know I cannot0 -
As there is a very simple work around it is hardly worth worrying or indeed getting worked up about0

I'm a geek, I don't like the idea of a work around. I was just giving my two pennies from my experience.
Also I'm missing out on what seems to be a vital part of MSE, the animated gifs!0
