  • She can claim a 25% discount if she lives alone. Whether she will also be eligible for Council Tax Benefit depends upon her total household income.

If the bill is in her husbands name rather than hers then I think it would be him that would have to claim, not her. Having said that, I believe that any entitlement for Council Tax Benefit would be calculated by taking into account the income of the whole household, not just the person whose name it is on.

The lady works & has other pensions, so unsure of total household income, so if it is based on income, how much is too much?

    Again, it depends!

Where is the husband in this situation?

  • If she works and has other pensions and presumably her husband has money from somewhere then their household income is probably too high; however as others have said we need more information.

If you were asking in your opening post 'does she get anything off just for being 73' the answer is no.

  • Hi,

This lady's Local Council should have a benefit calculator on their website. Taking into account income such as earnings, pensions and capital, you can see whether there would be any entitlement.

Also, for Council Tax Benefit, it is useful if both parties in a couple are registered for Council Tax at that property but this is more an issue for the Ctax department than benefits. This relates to who they can chase for debts etc
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

Ok thxs again just enquiring, don't have all the the facts. Looks like they will have to much income? So any elderly couples with no extra income or savings ,wouldn't get any reduction on there council tax?
