Council Tax Reduction?

But if she is working and claiming pensions, then she DOES have 'extra income'.
The DWP say that a couple over pensionable age need £198 a week to live on after housing expenses(rent/mortgage/Council Tax) are taken out. Do you know how old her husband is, does he claim a pension, do they live together? We really need to know these things.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Hi I didn't say she didn't have extra income, I was just saying 'other elderly couples with no extra income or savings'
My overall question was about any reduction for the elderly when it comes to council tax & it seems its all to do with income? But how much? Guess its down to circumstance. I am assuming the lady in question would have to much income with savings & pensions, but just wondering about elderly couples with only there state pension, do they get a reduction on their coucil tax. Will come back with more details, appreciate everyones help. Great site for quick responses.
Thx any wayjoe2cool0 -
If they have a very low income indeed, then they could be eligible for pension credits which in turn would 'passport' them to Council tax benefit. But in the end it depends on income, not simply age.0

that is incorrect, it is before things are deducted for CT, Expenses etc0 -

Some areas do give a small discount (very small) to those over a certain age but I believe it is not available in all areas - it is always worth asking if your LA is one of those.0

Yep. for my sins I work on Pension Credit, and income is looked at what comes into the household in total, expenses are not looked at.0 -
Ah right, thanks for the clarification.(AKA HRH_MUngo)
