Looking to buy a cheap VW GOLF

Hi there, need some advice.

I'm looking at buying a "cheap" VW Golf.

Its needs to be less then 5 years old, less then 90k on the clock, not 2 doors. Higher then 1.6 engine. Black or silver prefered, nothing loud!!:D

What sort of price should I be looking at and wheres the best place to find a cheap deal?

Also, considering a Mercedes A Class.

It will be mainly used for motorway commuting, roughly 100miles a day!!! Curently drive a BMW 3 series, and the mileage on that is spiralling (bought last year @ 34k, nearly hitting 60k soon).

Please advise. Suggestions for alternative welcomed.

Thanks all

    Hello nmiah786

I'll move your thread over to the 'Motoring & Public Transport' board, where it should get more views and responses.

    I'd start in 2 places;

http://www.parkers.co.uk to acertain what the market price for the car you want is (so you know what your target price is).

http://www.autotrader.co.uk to find suitable cars. Remember to register and login to get access to extra search criteria such as by mileage, price, or distance from you etc.
You'll find hundreds of suitable golfs on there. both dealers and private (they have to state whether dealer or private).

Golf and cheap just don't go together. Golf are always more expensive than the equivalent Astra/Focus ... and in my opinion, they aren't as good. The Golf is about the image and thats what you pay for. Look at a Focus ... you'll be surprised how good they are.

Agreed, I used to have a Golf and I drive a Focus at work and it is a fine car. Can't agree with you on the Astra though, boring and bland in my opinion.

I would dissagree with you on that one.
I've worked with many people who own focus's and have lots of problems with them. One chap had a new engine after just 2 years and 30k miles! You'll hear lots more stories about faulty mechanics on fords than on a VW, plus the VW holds it's 2nd hand value much better.

I've owned both fords and VW's in the past and would now be very reluctant to leave the VW/audi camp. You get what you pay for and I think they're worth it.

I would second that and go VW every time!! I used to have a polo that my hubby now drives and I have my Figaro!

anyway....yes... VW's, Golfs do hold thier prices very well so even buying a few years old it's still going to cost a fair bit especially the desiel versions.

Have you considered a Seat Ibiza or Leon instead of a VW? They are essentially VW underneath so excellent runners but just a different shell, and they are slightly cheaper to buy second hand as well. Could be worth looking into?

They are still quite sporty looking!
