SKY Broadband - 10MG - Erm no...

Hoping fellow money-savers can help me with this one -
I live in Central London and have had Sky Broad-Band for 2 years. I pay an extra £5 per month for up to 10MBs.
Over the past four months I have been monitoring my band-width and it has averaged just over 2.4MB (bearing in mind below 2MB there is no extra charge).
Since reporting this to SKY I have seen my speed go up slightly. However my line is capable of 10MB.
I have done all of the usual stuff (e.g. reset the wireless hub, tried a new dongle thingy etc), however the speed is back down to 2.1MB.
Can someone advise? Feel like £5 is being flushed down the drain each month if I cannot get at least 5MB.
Look forward to hearing from you!!!!
Rich.

Has your broadband speed with SKY been up to scratch? 8 votes

It still depends how far you are from the exchange (as the phone wire travels, not as the crow flies) - you'll never get 10Mbps (not 10MBps) unless you live in the exchange0

Yes - More than happyHello.
First off we need your router statistics.
Log onto your router its probably http://192.168.0.1/start.htm
User admin, password sky
Scroll down to show router statistics and post them here.
Then remove the faceplate from your master socket, plug the router into the test socket and repeat, then post the new stats. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
However my line is capable of 10MB.
How do you know this? The capacity of your line is dependent upon several factors but, as someone else has already pointed out, the biggest contributor is your distance from the exchange.
I am on a 'high speed' broadband package which advertises up to 20MBits but, because of my location, I expect about 6-8MBits and I'm quite happy with that.
My guess is that Sky have told you that your line is compatible with the 'up to 10MBit' service but is not the same as saying your line supports 10MBits of bandwidth.
If this is not the case then I apologise for my presumption.
As an extra note, I believe the national average is 3-4MBits (although London is probably higher).0 -

Not sure what this means but if you could advise I would be most grateful!

Yes - More than happyYou are some distance from the exchange as you have a high line attenuation of 54db, to get 10mbps it would have to be less than 40. You are connecting at a rate of 3.4 mbps which is probably as good as it gets. The noise margin of 7.1 db is about the minimum for reliable connection.
Were these pbtained from the test socket?
The Skyuser speed estimator suggests between 4 and 5 mbps for your line, maybe its a bit noisy, have a listen for pops and crackles and if you have them get on to BT to sort them.

I've recently moved from Sky to O2, on Sky I was getting ( capped ) 4160 kbps on O2 I'm now getting 4910 kbps.
That's on a line with 55.5 db attenuation and a noise margin of 7db that drops down to around 4db at night but doesn't cause any connection problems, I've been connected like that for over 10 days without any problems.
Try connecting to the master socket as mentioned above , for info on how to do this click here , if you see a difference then buy a filtered faceplate.0
