3 Minute call got me £60 "Thank You" credit! Brit Gas

Options
Just had the npower guy knocking on my door telling me they were better than the messiah and I should sign my life away there and then.

Im with British Gas currently and have been for the last two years, went onto moneysupermarket.com site and compared using my annual useage (actual based on last years useage) rather than monthly spend to make it as accurate as possible.

Turns out switching to EDF would save me £100 quid a year, I also noticed that if I switched to a websaver 4 tarriff with Brit Gas that would save me £41 anyway....so rang Brit Gas and told them that they were 7th in the list and couldnt be bothered with the hassle of changing and would stay if they could beat the top one (ie edf) the guy said ok.....change to the websaver 4 straight away and will give you a credit of £60 on your account within 3 months if you stay with us....call it a thank you credit....

Easy peesey lemon squeezy....british gas have better service than edf according to the reviews ive seen, got the same best rate i could in effect without having to do much more than tell em how it is and they reduced it.

08000480202 option 4 if your with brit gas.

Give it a go and see and hope you save some hard earnt. :money:

That's good, but I would request it in writing if I were you.
  • Got the details of the telebop I spoke to who did inform me that I would receive a letter of confirmation that my account will be credited by the £60.

Learnt the hard way to get the details of who I speak to as mysteriously people dissapear or dont work there when things promised dont materialise when have had other things "sorted out" over the phone.
  • Just tried this - the British Gas rep asked me which comparison website I'd used and then proceeded to go through the price comparison with me! Also offered £60 credit ("the best they could do") plus two energy saving devices (worth £30! ;)), but as they couldn't price match the best deal, I'll be off!

Sorry but that did make me laugh. I was with british gas for years paying direct debit.
They could not seem to take a sensible direct debit amount, It would vary each year from too little or not enough. They send bills out 3 days before the next payment is due making the figures less useable. I was paying £35 a month i knew i needed to pay £40 - £45 but seems their computer knows better than me.

What made me change supplier was them taking £80 from my account instead of the £35 they should be taking. When i contacted them i was told i could goto my bank and claim the money back. Told me i was £100+ in arrears thats why they increased the payment. I explained that another £35 + £80 had been taken since the bill had been printed and posted and that had been building for the past 14or 15 months, which was the last time they changed the direct debit amount.
I said i was not willing to pay £80 a month when i only needed to pay £50 or less.
Told repeatedly the computer works out the payment schedule & they cannot change them. I had had enough by this time & told them to cancel the direct debit. This seemed to phase the person on the phone. Shocked that i was willing to do such a thing, Miracles then happened it was suddenly possible for them to change the direct debit to £55 which i agreed to.

3 months later i was back in credit & moved to EDF. I sent final meter readings to british gas and yet they still managed to send me estimated readings that were way more than the correct figures.
Now paying EDF the same amount as british gas and have credits over £200 on both gas and electric.
They have since phoned me several times to tempt me with offers if i return.

Felt quite sorry for one guy after reeling all this off to him on the phone, Shame.
  • They seem to be getting desperate :o We had loads of problems with them at our old property because they kept switching our supply to themselves without our permission. We would get a letter saying they were switching us, we'd phone and tell them we didn't want to so they'd say they'd cancelled it, next thing we knew we'd get a letter saying we're now with them. This sort of thing must have nicely boosted their "10 trillion people are coming back to us" figures.
  • I guess not everyone will be happy with them, as I am sure there isnt a perfect company out there, but it worked for my personal situation and im happy with it, so I thought I would share to see if I could help someone else.
  • In addition to this, "High Value" customers that have an avereage/higher than average dual fuel energy consumption as well as a home servicing agreement may get a £90 "thank you" credit after one year, should they show signs of leaving.... the only thing is, not many people really know about this (even though everyone has the authority to offer this)... so threatening to leave won't neccessarily get you this.

Also those of you that are consumption concious can get a free "standby saver" and "real time electricity monitor" if you show signs of leaving and that sort of thing interests you.

  • just to add to my last post, the staff in the BG contact centres are not targeted on retention.. you leaving is no skin of their back. The best way to get these offers would probably be to ring up and say something like the following:

"I've always been very happy with the service I have recieved from British Gas, however a price comparison just showed I could save 20% with another company, which was alot more than I was expecting, I always thought switching would only ever save me a max 5%. I'm already on your cheapest tariff (make sure your already on their cheapest tariff avaliable to you or there just going to convince you to switch to WebSaver4 )but was just wondering if there was anything else you could offer me, after all, my late mother always told me I would never get if I never asked" .

  • wonder if this is the case with other providers? been with edf for 4 years and really happy with no hassles with service inthat time - on a really good low rate too. Been on the comparisons sites and could "save" up to £200 a year & 60 cashback via quidco to switch to Eon or Scotish power - scared of what level of customer service we will get though!

will phone them on monday and see what they offer!

I'm all for saving money but if someone wants to leave then they will be left to do so.

there is nothing better than giving loyal customers a "thank you"

there are people out there who will swear by BG and they should be rewarded and have been with silly energy saving monitors, Insulation free of charge ect.

You have to respect these people as they keep me and all of BG in a job. and tommy is right were not targetted on retention but we can help.
