Hi all,
I moved into my flat in South London at the beginning of March. Until now I have never paid council tax as the property is new and had never been registered (I found this out having called them to let them know I had moved in). I have now received my first bill and it seems that I also have to pay back the council tax from the last 6 months. I have 6 months left at my flat so basically their expecting me to pay double the amount every month from now on to pay for the last 6 months and the next 6 months. There is no way I can afford this, is there anything I can do? Any help would be much appreciated
Pete

You'll have to pay it I'm afraid. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0

No. You should have been paying from day 1, and setting it aside if you weren't paying until the registration was done.
If you are a single occupant, make sure you get the discount.0 -
Nope, you've got to pay I'm afriad. You should have realised this straight away. If you talk nicely to the council they might be able to sort something out but then again you've not been paying this for months, why should they help?
Hope you get sorted.I run an event management company, I put on events, I go to events, if I don't know anything about events - its not worth knowing!:j:j:jNegotiate, Negotiate, and Negotiate again.:j:j:j0 -
There is no way around council tax, you will end up with the bailiffs if you don't pay. You should be able to ask for the arrears to be spread out over the rest of the financial year but it's unlikely to be longer.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

When you say you have 6 months left at the flat, does that mean you are renting? If so then I would usually expect the landlord to pay council tax. Just a thought, I may have got the wrong end of the stick.
Edit: I should say of course that some tenants do pay council tax, it all depends on your lease, but something to check if you are a tenant.0 -

No, unfortunately for the OP landlords do not normally pay council tax, and according to the priority order for the tax tenant occupiers are liable before landlords.
However, landlords sometimes offer to refund the sum to the tenant as an incentive which accounts for where you may have seen this before.0 -

Thanks for your help all. Im sure I will be able to figure out a way of paying, just need to budget my spending over the next few months. Last thing I would want is a visit from the bailiffs!0

Your actually lucky because normally council tax is paid by monthly installments over 10 months APRIL TO JAN, so them letting you pay it over 6 months and not asking for it all by Jan is pretty good of them.
You should have paid it from day one, make sure you learn from the experience!0 -
In theory the legislation allows for them to issue a bill today and take the payments over Nov - Jan. By spreading it to March they have exceeded the number of instalments they have to allow.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
