Coming off the pill...what to expect?

Hi All

I have been on the same pill for about 11 years, previous to that i used to get terrible periods to the point where i'd be doubled up in pain and running to the toilets. Me and my Fiance have decided that we want to try for our first baby, but i'm really worried about what to expect.

I know every one is different but do you think after so many years on the pill that i will go back to how i was before as a teenager? I'm also worried about keeping track of when i am supposed to have a period...should it stay on the same track as when i was on the pill? (Sorry for seeming slightly dumb, it's really just something i've never dealt with before)

What are your experiences of coming off the pill after so long?

Thanks for reading

I came off the pill in May and it took a while for my body to feel normal. In the first month I had really painful boobs:eek:

I had awful periods before I was on the pill and was also worried about what they would be like.... but thankfully they've been fine:D (well better than they were)

For some ladies it can take a while for your cycles to get back to normal so it'll be a guessing game as to when it's due at first.

    I've gone to a 31/32 day cycle.

Hope to see you on the trying for a baby thread soon;)

Hi, I was on the pill for about 10 years and came off it in May to start trying for a baby. On the whole it was pretty uneventful but I did have sore boobs and an enhanced sense of smell for a bit. I had a bleed about 2 weeks after then conceived (but sadly later miscarried) 2 weeks after that. I think it can be different for different people.

I'd say expect a few funny symptoms (which are all very similar to pregnancy symptoms, just to warn you!) but all in all it's not that dramatic

    Good luck!

  • I just came off my pill this month after being on it for 10 years and I was surprised to have a period 2 days after I came off, but it will be interesting to see if my periods fall straight into a pattern or not! I was worried about suffering terrible headaches, as I would get them on my 7 day break but I only had a couple of bad days and since then they have gone. I've been eating chocolate like nobody's business since I came off, my appetite has been crazy lol. Well coming off the pill has been my excuse anyway :rotfl: Apart from that I have felt pretty much normal which I am pleased about as I was very apprehensive having been on the pill for so long. My period was painful for the first day like it was before I went on the pill, but I will just have to wait and see how they pan out in the long run, but we are hoping to start trying for a baby in a couple of months.

I've come off it to lose weight, and had sore boobs and odd bleeds.

It's all evened out now :D hopefully it will for you too, before you get pregnant and the hormones really kick in!

I wasn;t on the pill for long, but i was using various methods of contraception for years in a row without a break.
But when i came off the pill i has very sore boobs in the first month, i noticed alot of people have this.

Also my cycle went from 28 on the pill, to a 26, then a 29 then a 32, and it was 32 days up until i got pg.

Good luck with TTC! :) x

I came off the pill and fell pregnant a month later

It wasn't supposed to happen as quickly as that :rotfl:

    Hi OP

I was taking the same pill for 10 years before coming off it to try for my first baby (going back 8 years ago now)

I fell pregnant the first month also (sadly had a miscarriage) and then fell pregnant again the following month with my DS.

I stopped taking the pill last year (have had a DD also in between) but I found that my cycle reverted to normal (for me) fairly quickly.

I would expect your cycle to revert to how it was before taking the pill in length (hopefully in your case it won't be accompanied by the pain you had when you were a teenager)

The pill contains artificial hormones which regulate your cycle so I guess it makes sense that without the artificial hormones your body will revert to it's natural pattern eventually.

Good luck with the babymaking :)
  • Hi,

I came off the pill after 9 years earlier this year (going to try for a baby nearer to Christmas). I too had sore boobs and shorter cycles for a couple of months (my cycle used to be 31-33 days, but it varied between 26 and 28). It went back to normal or how it was before I started taking the pill not long afterwards. I then messed up my cycle again after having 2 'accidents' and taking the Morning After Pill twice in about 5 weeks - I then didn't have a period for 64 days (slight panic there) - again, my cycle's gone back to normal now, so fingers crossed for the next few months that I conceive quickly and without any problems.

    Good Luck
