And - humour me
- was there a CD/DVD in your drive at the time, and what were you doing with the PC at the time?

Before anything else, backup all your important documents, music, pictures, favourites, emails - and whatever else - to CD or a USB stick. Even if you have to let the computer sit for an hour uploading to one of these free hosting sites, just backup what you can't afford to lose!
The reason the drive is doing that, is because it has come across as a bad part of the drive, and it is making several attempts to read the data.
Download and run SIW (link). Then under Hardware > Devices > Disk drives, tell me the make and model of your harddrive.
Chances are, you can goto the manufacturer's website and download a tool to test the drive, and this will then tell you if the drive really is dead or alive.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
Basmic - do you know of a SMART data reader for windows? That would soon tell us if the HD is doing multiple error corrections/calibrations/seeks. I only know of one for Linux.0

The description says "IDE/DISK MAXTOR_6Y160P0".
Will check out the Maxtor website to see if i can test the drive.
Thanks for the info!0 -
Drive connections can go bad, try reseating the ribbon and power cables. Serial cables easily fall off too.0

Yep, went to the Maxtor website & downloaded "SeaTools For Windows".
It did a few driver checks and my Hard drive actually passed in all the tests!
Short drive Self Test
Long Drive Self Test
Drive Info
Short generic test
Long generic test
There are a few other things i'll test from links on the website, as it seems my Hard Drive could be holding "corrupted data" or maybe there's something else causing this system problem. Hopefully, i'll find out soon enough.
But i'll update as i go along,.......... as this could be helpful to others.0
