Eczema

Options
My 18 month old granddaughter has bad eczema all over her body which keeps her awake at night, the steroid cream my dil has been using is no longer effective and she would prefer not to use steroids if possible. My dil has a severe nut allergy and has had my granddaughter tested for allergies as well, the results came back positive for an allergy to eggs and cats, she no longer has food with egg but they still have their cat, I believe that should let the cat have a holiday for a few weeks and see if her eczema calms down and take it from there. In the meantime does anyone have a suggestion what my daughter in law could use to help my granddaughter, something that doesn't contain a lot of chemicals. Thanks for any help.:)

has she tried the oat based products Aveeno I think they are called? I know someone who went from having the bandages at night to nothing with this stuff.
She could also try hot washing her bedding without chemicals, cutting out dairy and excluding the cat from the upstairs rooms and seeing if anything helps.
  • Hi again! Just replied to your post on the tanning thread!

I don't know if it would be suitable for your granddaughter and dil with their allergies but my boyfriend suffers from eczema and a homeopath recommended that he use coconut oil on it - he has found a huge improvement since using it. The homeopath also treated him for his cat allergy and hay fever and he has seen big improvements, so maybe it would be worth your granddaughter visiting one? I think it cost about £45 each time and he went 3 times as he was treated for quite a few things.

    HTH!

    Some info here too, glowgirl.

Try to keep to natural fibres next to her skin for clothing and bedding, avoid bio and perfumed washing products and skip fabric conditioners, perfumed ironing water etc, even avoid the suds from shampoo running down her face/back. Try emulsifying ointment or aqeous cream instead of soap. Avoid her getting overheated. Try to not to have the heating on at home so high that the atmosphere becomes too hot and dry. Keep an eye on whether certain other foods exacerbate things. It helped my DD to avoid citrus and tomatoes at the time. Blankets may be better than a duvet.

Try to avoid the itch cycle as much as possible by distraction or whatever means as scratching just exacerbates the problem and the misery. My dd sometimes got very hot and itchy in bed , I used to give her a little cold 'hot' water bottle to cuddle for a little while or place on the itchy bit to calm things down and a cool drink to sip. Let her sit up for a while to cool the bed down too.

MY DD1 suffered badly when she was little; I do sympathise. She grew out of it by the time she'd started school, so fingers crossed!

Thank you very much, some great replies and suggestions:) I shall be speaking to my dil tomorrow and will read her some of the suggestions.

Bronnie, my dil does most of things already but I will talk to her about the citrus and toms, they eat a lot of fruit, I also like the cold water bottle idea, I had also read that most kids improve a lot with age so, yes, fingers crossed.

FelinePrincess, They wouldn't be able to try coconut oil cos of my dils nut allergy which is a real shame cos I've heard good things too, I am very interested in the idea of a homeopath, I had forgotten about this option, a homeopath really helped me with my hay fever years ago so will suggest that, they were quoted £180 for one session with a dermatologist:eek:
jenhug, I had also forgotten about Aveno products (bad grandmother:()I have also heard of great results from them and they sell the range in Boots near where she lives, so thank you:)

jimsmum, a shop near me sells this I shall buy some next time I'm in town:)

    Thanks again everyone:T

    Hi Glowgirl!
Sorry to hear about your little one's eczema. I can totally sympathise and suffered terribly for years, particularly as a child (although I've been mostly free for about 10 years now).
The best thing I ever tried was the Holland and Barrett Aloe Vera Gel, cheap and effective:

Thank you both:) Hi goanmad:), I have this product already:TI like it for a very superficial reason that it doesn't contain oil and therefore doesn't wreck my fake tan;), haven't used it for a while though but will suggest to dil:)

Link for National Eczema Society, very highly recommended, we are still members even though DH's eczema is vastly improved these days, he used to suffer very badly.

I have had great success with Salcura products for my eczema. I used a combination of the Intensive spray and Zeoderm cream to control it and I believe they now do trial sizes that will treat for a few days so you don't shell out lots of cash if it doesnt work for your grandaughter
