2 Broadband connections

Options
Hi I'm needing a bit of advice on which ISP provider to go with. I'm about to move into a new flat with mates tomorrow.

And what we need is:-

2 Broadband connections (one for work, on for personal), also both broadband connections must have dynamic IP.

Ideally we need a tv package included too, I'm not too bothered about what channels we get, although Skysports is a must.

So far I believe (although not certain) that Tiscali and BT have dynamic broadband. i.e. Ip changes on reboot of router.

Also what is the likely cost of the above? I believe I would need two separate phone line (1 for each broadband connection), so would probably need BT to install another one. i think there is 1 existing line in the place.

Thanks

Why Dynamic? Most people need to specify a static IP, don't think I have ever come across anyone needing a dynamic IP - unless you regularly get banned from sites etc!!

But even most dynamic IP's are now very sticky - they only generally change if either the ISP decide or if you change the MAC address of the Modem!

Virgins (cable, if it is in your area) IP is dynamic but very rarely changes.
  • If you want SkySports, then Sky is the cheapest way to get it. You are going to need two phone lines installed in order to get two broadband lines. Most providers will issue a dynamic ip anyway so not much to worry about there. I think BT have a promo on at the moment offering free phone line installation (usually £125).

Best thing to do is to phone Sky up and see what they say.

I have my broadband with o2 and cannot fault them. Got it going through quidco and got 70 quid for my troubles!!

As above: forgive me questioning the stated requirements, but why do you need a dynamic IP? A broadband connection for work use should preferably have a static IP, as it assists with firewall setup at each end of the connection if you are VPNing into work or vice versa.

A dynamic IP is only really of use to bypass game or web site IP bans, or so you can wait less time on filesharing sites while using free accounts. A static IP Is *much* easier to configure applications and firewalls with.

O2 and Be uses "sticky" dynamic IPs, so you will have the same IP virtually all the time - many many months or years on end.
  • Looks like ive been scuppered using sky at least. The new flat doesnt allow the installation of satelite dishes so can't use that sadly. it would have been my preferred choice. The reason behind the needing the dyanamic IP is we do use gaming sites, and quite a lot of them. there are four of us who use them, and we dont all want to be logged on at the site time using the same IP.

We are not colluding in any way at at, its just in the past Ive experienced problems when we've all used the same gaming sites of the same network. I.e. at uni partygaming blocked 10 accounts including mine as we all used to come round my house and log in and play games. Not even the same games mind, but it was just one huge headache I'd rather avoid.
