Text messaging with pictures problem

Hi, I'm not sure if I should be asking this or the Techie board! Despite changing my mobile I STILL can't send photos by SMS. Could it be because my SIMcard is at least 5 years old (probably about 8 in reality)? I can set the message up with the picture inserted but it just won't go from the outbox. A friend says he has exactly the same problem on his current phone, although he could do it on his old phone (I couldn't receive them though!!)

Any bright ideas anyone please ;)

Some old sim cards (the one that came out before MMS etc) just won't update with newer services. I use to work on the Orange tech support helpline and it was a real problem.

Have you check that you have the MMS service on your acc at the network. There has to be the service enabled on your acc screen for the service to work.

Do you have the setting on the phone ? If it's a sim free of unlocked from another network it won't have the right setting and you'll need them sending from the network. The setting live on the phone not on the sim card...
  • Oh gosh Jon, I'm a technophobe I'm afraid! How do I check about the MMS service please? I am with Orange, although the phone I now have was originally locked to O2 and I had to have it "doctored". That was complicated enough for my braincell! I don't really want to start messing about with changing my SIM card and then having to have it twiddled in order to keep my phone number (it would cause way too many problems to change my number), and I don't want to lose my supplier either as it is dirt cheap, hassle-free and needless to say, now unavailable.

If you're on Orange, go here and get them to send the MMS settings to your phone. You'll get a text message which will (hopefully) install the correct settings for you.

You can get the setting from Orange (as noted above) or from Nokia if it's a Nokia handset. If it's an O2 phone it'll be trying to send the pic's via O2, which isn't going to work on an Orange acc !!

But, I'd think from your comment at the foot of your post you could be on the old Virgin tariff ? If you are you, I'm afraid, could be out of luck. They're so old we'd have major problems getting them work (and as a rule, couldn't). Orange aren't sending out new sims for these acc's as they want rid of them (they must be coming up to 7 years old or more now).

You could try calling CS, you need to find out if your acc even has MMS on it anyway, if it doesn't no amount of setting on the phone are going to work...
  • I am indeed on the Virgin tariff - one of the few people left on it now! I love it as I pay no line rental, just whatever my calls for the month of cost, by DD so now faffing about with putting credit on the phone or worrying that I will run out of credit. I suspect they lost money hand over fist with this deal!!

I still have the SIM which came with this phone. I suppose I could use it to send any picture messages that I wanted to.

Many thanks for all your help :T
  • As said before you could do with checking with customer service that you account is set up for data services as old accounts sometimes have not had this done. Also the settings would need to be checked in the phone, give cs a ring with an alternative phone number available and they should give it their best shot.
