How long do Abbey take?

Do Abbey usually drag their feet when cashing cheques/postal orders? Also does it matter that if the cheque attached with the letter for the SAR is from another person different from the named account holder? My OH is claiming back the charges on his Abbey bank account but he doesn’t have a cheque book so I wrote the cheque out to Abbey and signed it myself from my own bank account, this was attached with OH’s letter.

The letter/cheque was received by them on 7/9/09 so it’s been 3 weeks already. By my calculations they have until 17/10/09 to respond with the list of charges/statements, what do I do or tell my OH to do if they still haven’t cashed the cheque or sent the statements out by that date?

Where did you send it and was it sent recorded delivery?

and yes it was sent by recorded delivery, posted 3/9/09 received at their end 7/9/09.
  • I sent my claim for statements off, not recorded delivery and with a cheque from my own account, on the 8th September. I received the statements back pretty swiftly however - I only received them from sometime in 2007 yet I requested using the template letter as supplied.

On that note, should I write back and demand that they send me 6 years more?

  • OK I guess I just have to wait.

What happens if it gets to day 40 and they still haven't cashed the cheque?

I would complain to the information commissioner's office.

  • OK so the list of charges arrived in 2 seperate letters as you stated - thanks. Due to the postal strike, this was sent on 14th Sept and was only received on Sat 3rd Oct! Funnily enough, they recognised that a cheque had been sent with the letter although they still haven't cashed it yet??

The only problem being, they only sent them starting from January 2003. I have a copy of the letter in front of me and I clearly stated from July 2001, my OH called them and requested the charges from July 2001 and the woman on the phone said that on the system it said January 2003! After about half an hour of waiting, she finally said that they will send out the missing statements.

Do you think I ought to write a letter to them so that everything is in writing and on record?

I'm guessing that there were probably a lot of charges between that period because we were going through a rough time and that's probably the reason why they didn't send it, I can't see no other reason for it.

It really is an eye opener, I only thought there was about £100 of charges, turns out there is £260. Now off to work out the interest. . .
  • No I think you will be fine since they have at least admitted they can go further back.

  • Abbey’s 40 days to supply the info will be up on 17/10/09. I have only received incomplete statements and still missing July 2001 to January 2003 despite calling them nearly 10 days ago and them saying they would send them out.

I sent the template letter from this site, how does this differ from a full SAR or what I hear other people talk about?

I doubt within the next 3 days the statements/list of charges will arrive, so what do I do next? Can I report them to someone/an official body?
