The numbers and relative risks (a subject thing) add up to new car via scrappage in this case I feel.
Your description of the 106 is of a car deteriorating (rust). I would want rid of a car by the time any significant welding is neccessary for MOT pass, it's the beginning of the end.
If it was special / some kind of classic it might be wirth putting money into it, but it is just a small car (a decent one in it's time) like so many others and easy to replace.

The scrappage scheme came in at the right time for us. My old "M" reg cinquecento was getting unreliable although we were able to do most of the necessary repairs. It owed nothing and had seen both daughters through their "L" plates. So we sent it to the tin-can factory via the scrappage in July.
Monday was delivery of Hyundai i10 which younger daughter will take to Uni.
We are happy that she has a "safer" car and one that she can call her own rather than Mum's old car. Also with the warranties comes the knowledge that we won't be having the midnight call "Mum... I've broken down" and we have to mend the thing..
    So yes we are pleased.

you can definatly haggle and get scrappage - we have just bought a nissan qashqai +2 with some extra bits - list price £16,638.99. We have paid £13975 after haggling + scrappage (on a nine year old vehicle as Nissan take them from 8 years up)

But that isn't part of the Government Scrappage scheme, that is just a deal from Nissan.

Well they were lying to you then, under the Nissan 8 year scheme, there is no government funding, they don't even have to scrap your old car, it is just a form of discount.

It is not even described as a Scrappage Scheme by Nissan, it is described as the " British Built Trade In Scheme ".

And of course the more expensive the car the more room for discount. You wouldn't be too impressed if you were only getting £2k off a £30k car.

The pint being made on earlier posts is that small entry level cars have had the price squeezed to the minimum and/or the orders they are taking mean they don't need anymore business (and/or couldn't supply many more anyway.

Indeed, I suspect that the " discount " is often built in to the list price anyway ie; the list price is superficially increased to allow for the " discount ", this is the motor trade we are talking here, almost at the same level as Estate Agents.:D
  • My car is the same. I have spent £1k in the last 6 months for necessary repairs and now just discovered I have a hole in my catalytic converter ( part to buy new just short of £200 not inc labour or I can get it cheaper from a breakers and hope it doesnt conk out) Im gutted. I'm debating wether to use the scrappage scheme or keep my car in the hope that if I have this fixed nothing else will go wrong with it!
The thing is some places offer scrappage against used which is all well and good but your straight back in there with mot and tax and everything and like you said if you get a dudd your screwed.
You can fork out all the money for your repairs and hope that will be it for a while(in my case a few months )
or you can get a new car with the scrappage scheme - no mot costs for 1st 2 years no/really low tax and under warranty.
I dont know what to do either

your cat is part of your exhaust and is an item that will need replacing on evey car at some point in its life. shop around and try to get it for less that £200.
