I love to come down on Christmas morning and see piles of presents on the the living room floor.... I never ever manage to stick to my budget as I always see extra bits and bobs to buy even on Christmas Eve....
I do not have a lot of extra money but I will spend whatever extra I have on the kids for christmas....
We have christmas pj's and a present on Christmas Eve, then on Christmas morning they open most of their pressies. Grandad comes round for Christmas dinner with his presents for them and I normally leave one pressie for Boxing Day.
Looking at the comments on here, I know I am in the minority and I agree with all of the posts on here that it is memories that they will remember when they are older and that familiy time is the most important thing, but if I can give them that as well as a nice big pile of presents then I will.

we've got a 2 and a half yo and I've spent £60 (to be shared out between a stocking from fc and presents from us for under the tree.)
The main present is a dolls house from ebay for £16.99 + delivery - that'll be from us as well as some 2 for £15 bits from argos (playdough, dora doll, board game, ).
Fc is bringing things like pyjamas, soap, books, crayons, choccy coins. (about £10-£15 tops)
My mum and dad always gave everything from Fc and just one present from them (ker plunk I remember one year) . I always vowed I would never let FC get all the credit for the presents when I had children!!!:rotfl:0 -
When my little girl was six months we spent £50 on her. She got a lot of presents from relatives. She didn't understand any of it. I've almost done my shopping for this year. I've bought my little girl (3) ten presents, but only spent £50, because I've shopped around. She's asked for one thing, but is excited by lots of toys. I've spent about £80 on my little boy (18 months), but their presents look the same value.
I am concerned by the way Christmas is going. I choose to work part time and have less money so that I can be with my children. I've learnt to shop around for bargains (a lot of it thanks to this site) Obviously they're not at a stage where they want certain things but I don't know what I will do when they start wanting Wiis etc- we just won't be able to afford it. It seems to be quite competitive as well. I am shocked by how much people spend on their children's birthdays these days. I used to be given one present and was happy with that, children have a huge amount these days. My little girl/ boy get two- one from us and one from each other.0 -
I think its bad that parents always seem to buy their kids "What they want" rather than giving them what they feel they deserve with a limit.
Its a great example of the materialist society we live in where parents will buy kids everything they want.
When did parents stop saying "No!" to their kids!?0 -
I'm in the less is more camp! I aim for about £50 for my 5 year old for Xmas, I'm a student so simply haven't got the money to spend, and I do try and get him to understand that mummy hasn't got enough pennies to buy all the toys on the adverts that he wants. I have got sooooooooo many toys etc in my house, and he only plays with about a third of them so i don't see the point of adding to an already too big pile. I think that 2 or 3 carefully selected things that he will actually use rather than a whole load of rubbish just to give him more things to open is the way to go.
His dad's family (we're not together) always spend far too much IMO on all of the kids in the family, but that's their way. I would personally say it's like trying to buy love but that's just how I see it.Little lady arrived 13/12/110 -
My two boys (5,7) have 2 ds games each, 2 dvds, 2 lego sets, magnetix and a 2nd hand wii wit games. I will also by them pjs and sticking fillers. I have the mirror lego also for stocking fillers. Will spend £70 each plus £170 for the wii and games (which is for the whole family).
My baby will get about £50 spent. So far he has mr men dvd box set and thats it but I plan to get him a leap frog toy.
Have toned down the toy spend this year as by ages 5 and 7 they have so much of every single toy imaginable.
Normally I go crazy at Xmas and I do like them to have lots of pressies to open but they will still have more than enough.
By shopping around for deals I have got my total gift spend to under £700. Still alot of money but that is for the whole family/friends, the 3 kids and my OH. I dont know what he has bought me though.MANAGED TO CLEAR A 3K OVERDRAFT IN ONE FRUGAL, SUPER CHARGED MONEY EARNING MONTH!:j

£600 on gifts (our 3 kids, 9 neices/nephews, 2 sets of parents, 4 brothers, 3 SIL, 6 cousins, 3 aunts/uncles and 4 very close friends), £100 for food/treats to last Christmas eve to our Jan 1st dinner, and this year DH and I will be buying each other a new mobile phone. All saved up for. Oh and we may take the boys to the panto or something but that is out week-week entertainment money.0
