Amount of money spent on christmas

I wish to find out from other folk what amount that they spend on their kids for christmas. I have a daughter who is 2.5yrs at the moment and was thinking of spending £130-£140 which would a bit of underwear and pyjamas included in santa's present.

I know that she will not understand this but on speaking to friends they spend a lot more. What are people's preception on this.

Save your money for when she does understand, and starts asking for expensive stuff! That amount is more than enough to keep a child of 2.5 happy. Our first son had ridiculous amounts spent by all concerned, by the time we got to the last one we knew that a box made them just as happy and kept them just as entertained!!

We our daughter was that age we spent the money on experiences instead of gifts. Like a night at a hotel with a pool, a trip to the zoo and a visit to the theatre. DD always had more gifts than she knew what to do with from family and friends so gifts from us would have been a waste of money.

I would have said at first that is too much, but we are thinking about getting my DD a playhouse and they cost a fortune!!! She wont get much more than that (she is 2 also) maybe just a couple of wee bits and pieces but I imagine we will spend about £100.

We bought a little tykes playhouse last year and a few bits for the stocking which amounted to £180. So this year, we have reduced this. She is starting to play with more grown up toys and does not seem to have that many. I do have the money saved up for this but trying to figure out if I have too many ideas written down for this.

I nearly had a heart attack once i was old enough to realise how much my parents have spent on me and my siblings at xmas over the years! Think its about £100 on father Christmas then another £50-70 on xmas pressies. Think mum starts saving very early on! I've told her not to spend so much but she feels she has to. Though if there was ever anything expensive (say a bike etc) then we would have that as a birthday AND xmas present.

  • Last year I spent £130 (ish) each on my ds and dd - 5 and 3 yrs old. DD had a dreamtown rose petal cottage which alone was £80 and then a few stocking fillers. I usually get them some clothes and pj's as part of their pressies too.
This year my ds wants a new bike and that alone has cost £120  - the expense starts now he's getting older!

...apart from driving lessons, uni fees and cheap digs after that....
  • At that age we spent around £100, but do know parents who spend £500. £300 seems to be the "norm"
