What stock would you have punt on ?

Options
Just a bit of fun here, but I think the current Bull run is going to last until early / mid 2010, so if you had a Hypothetical 5 thousand or more to invest for instance in a particular stock or maybee even a tracker, which one would you plum for right now ?

I'd use it to short the FTSE through options

Pure punt in shares 347 UUP @ $22.84
    Or options 105 March 2010 $23 calls @ $0.75 UUPCW

Might have a problem filling the last one :) but since it's a bit of fun we'll pretend the sellers were there.

Out of interest, where can a small investor purchase options?

Those are US options, I know nothing about the options products available on UK stocks for retail investors, but for those they can be traded through Interactive Brokers or probably E*Trade

  • Glaxo have just won a deal to sell Lucozade in China which maybe their biggest market.

Worth a punt in my view.

    Oo, I don't know.

    Spectris (LSE: SXS.L)
    699.00 at the moment
Looks like a reasonable small cap. It's exports should go up if the pound goes down, which I think is more likely than up very much.

    Or:
    Zytronic PLC (LSE:ZYT) 162.00
Makes touch sensors and optical filters for electronic displays. I read somewhere the sensors are suitable for vending machines.

but I also think gozomark has a point (shorting the FTSE).
  • I am/would put it into lloyds, rbs and sxx. All are great long term stocks, they might not rise as quickly as some other aim companies but theres much less risk.

    lloyds, rbs........ much less risk.

I wouldn't agree with that - I'd still put atleast a 10% chance on their shares being worth nothing within a few years

aps is 80% not 90% afaik ses lloyds will exceed 50%

Not sure about options but covered warrants can be bought for pennies and be sold for pounds if you get the timing right. RBS and socgen sell them and selftrade and barclays deal them and also etrade uk I think will let you deal anything including america if you pay them enough. Theres a fantasy game run for it if you wanted to try

I will guess DNDN who have a cancer treatment coming to market maybe

or a uk share I will guess CEY which is a new egypt gold mine though I dont know much about them they are the only people in that area and maybe they'll discover a new seam or something

The symbol to short the ftse is xuks.
Its not really a money making idea, theres always some stock that'll go up even in a bear market and also its just a plain old tracker and an index doesnt move that much either way compared to a single share or even a sector tracker.

Shorting is generally a bad when the currency of a country is declining because the prices in that currency should rise in theory I think. I know these mistakes because Im shorting the index, but Im net long so I kid myself its not a mistake :o

Theres tons of commoditys in the index, we really need another doomsday scenario for the index to fall, some idea china wont just keep buying them and also some dollar strength - they have stopped printing apparently
